I think all of the responses are valid and to some degree correct. I just wonder why Columbus would not be on the radar…more. We have a sizable population, relatively strong indie film houses in the Gateway and especially the Drexel, and a large young, art-driven population. I wonder if there could be more done to get the smaller, and in many cases the better, films here sooner.

Columbus is the 15th biggest in the country with a steadily growing population.Posted 11 months ago # -
The practice under discussion here is called "platforming." Back in the day, it was used for specialty releases so the distributors could get the most mileage out of a limited number of expensive-to-produce 35mm prints, also so they could provide theaters in smaller markets with ads and posters full of review quotes from publications in larger markets.
Now that virtually everything's digital and good reviews/word of mouth travels in an instant, it seems to serve two purposes for the distributor: Around awards time, it allows them to do a year-end, award-qualifying run in NY and LA, then hold off on releasing in other markets until nominations come out and they can get the most box office bang out of the ensuing press buzz. Times like now, they use box office numbers in the larger markets to determine how fast they should ramp up a wider release and how many screens they should go for when they do. The buzz for Moonrise Kingdom seems to be growing strong and the numbers where it's opened so far are consistently impressive, so now the film is opening at the Drexel one week earlier than previously announced.
Distributors focus less on a city's reputation than the numbers, and numbers-wise, we make a bigger impression to NY and LA folk as a Big 10 college town. So we wait to see Moonrise Kingdom and get early access to stuff like the Tucker Max movie. (Seriously, it screened here way in advance of its release.)
