A lot of you are probably rolling your eyes at this, but I'm wondering if anyone else sees the merit of transforming PARTS OF High St into a public transportation and bicycles only thoroughfare.
If you have any other thoughts or ways to transform High St you can leave them here.

Yeah, those parts of town are less hellish as a result.
There's really not much to what's happening in New York or anywhere else like Bogota, Colombia, which they patterned permanent and temporary street closures after in the first place.
You put up a barricade, shut down the street, redirect traffic and drivers deal with it. That's it. The projects are a success, people enjoy themselves and more closures get planned.
I don't even think it's the people in Columbus. People don't know what they want until the see it. It's the leadership that's the problem.
Wait another five to ten years and the leadership in Columbus will probably be up to speed.

Serious questions:
What would be the goal of such a transformation? Is there a specific problem you're trying to solve?

I had to look at a map, but at least some of high street isn't 23 already, so I guess it could be done legally.
Why it's a good idea is a whole other question. Is the idea to keep people out? Make it harder for people to go to whatever area is closed off? Seems like with traffic enforcement we've already got a good start on that...
I get that there's a "I hate cars" vibe in play and I don't share that vibe, so it's likely I'm missing something... but why would this be a good idea?

That is my question as well.
The main problem I have is that there is not a West parallel street to High to take the load. Most places that I've seen where they've successfully done this, there is an alternate route on either side which is important not just for throughput, but for access to businesses. OSU is an immovable object. Neil Ave is not acceptable for increased traffic either.
There are plenty - if not more - examples of thriving commercial streets which are car and else. Following those examples makes more sense.

I guess I was thinking the downtown area was the most feasible (if not the only feasible) place for this reason.

Hell, I don't know; I could imagine parts of High Street, (SN mostly) as car free; but I doubt it would happen. Since were imagining though, I'd like to see it slowed down through the SN and probably Campus, and taken down to one lane with wider sidewalks (through the SN).
However, many of the businesses in this area do not have "back door" or ally access, so they get their deliveries from High Street. Like Andrew said, there is no West parallel to High St. Neil is a bit far off and dead-ends in campus, and the home-owners on Neil in Victorian Village would certainly have a problem with that anyway. Who could blame them; they've already tried to slow down traffic as it is with the occasional islands on Neil.
To tell the truth, the only reason I would like to see it slowed down with wider sidewalks is so that there's more room to eat, and especially drink on the street; if you have a patio your about 50% more likely to get me as a regular (which could be a good or bad thing). I like to J-walk across High, which is easier with slower traffic. I'm a big supporter of drinking in public; its one of the things I miss most about living in Berlin. I'd sign a petition, but I wouldn't "waste" or "spend" my time trying to change anything about it really; I'd "vote" for it at the IV association meeting, but that's about it.
I'm still pissed they took out the crosswalk at 4th and High by Thunderpussy, but it probably wasn't needed anyway.

Temporary street closures might drive more foot traffic to independent business in the Short North, they have the potential to reduce some types of crime, which happen in proximity to High (more eyes), and lastly improve the quality of life of the residents.
