Check out the Dispatch debate "The Hot Issue: Would you ride a streetcar line running between Downtown and Ohio State?" Which of the "NOs" are most entertaining for you? Here are mine:

People don't ride COTA why would they ride the same thing on rails.... And really what is there in downtown to go ride a streetcar for? Maybe it should run from Downtown to Northland.... there you could go from nothing to nothing and see all the run down property and empty building along the way.

I don't live in or would ever go to that area of town. Now a streetcar connecting Dublin (Tuttle Crossing) with Powell (Polaris) and Easton would be nice...

Ahhh...if only the people who commented on the Dispatch Hot Issue were as well informed and open-minded as people who post here.

I think those Dispatch boards are populated by teenagers. Eventually the conversations sour to things like racist rants and personal attacks. Although it seems the same folks that are anti streetcar are anti everything else from recycling to preservation. I envision them as a group placing blame elsewhere when global warming hits the climax and we are becoming extinct.

Not to derail Walker but I've got to ask. Over the years on various open blogs I've noticed several times that seemingly the same individuals will take on two or even three conflicting points of view complete with separate aliases. They start wars with everyone willing to squabble with them and most often run normal people off. Does it happen here too?

I would absolutely ride, but I wish it would run a little further south on High to MV. I work downtown and would definately ride it to work

Seriously, you wouldn't ride it ever? Not during Gallery Hop? Or other events?
I figured someone who worked in the Short North would use it to grab lunch somewhere that was either too far for a quick walk to too close for a short drive.

i would ride it. the public transportation here sucks. i rode the "T" in pittsburgh every day to work and around town. they have a great system. i hope this is something like that.

My biggest fear is going to be that the line isn't long enough to be an effective transportation tool. It needs to be big enough to serve the population. Lacking that, it may very well fail, but not because people won't ride public transit, but because it doesn't serve a large enough population.
And the naysayers will say... 'oh, people don't ride public transit' ... when the real reason is 'people can't ride public transit if it doesn't serve their needs.'
Those are two VERY different concepts.

By the time I got downtown to get on the streetcar, I may as well continue going with my current mode of transportation for another few blocks to get to the Short North. I have so many options for lunch in the short north within a 10-15 minute walk, it would be rare for me to take a streetcar.
And since I'll probably be getting my street repaved with gold bricks before a streetcar line runs through the my neighborhood, I just don't think I'll be riding the streetcar much. I'll probably find a reason to ride it once or twice just to check it out. I understand that the streetcar may serve a lot of people's needs, it just doesn't serve mine.

^^ There's definitely a catch 22 with these "starter" rail-based systems. It's got to be big enough to get good ridership, and it's also got to be cheap enough to get built.
If it doesn't get built...it serves nobody. If it doesn't get good ridership, that "starter" line just became the "only" line. It's a tough line to walk, and while I would've liked to see the south side neighborhoods on the plan, I think it'll do fine. There are lots of reasons for lots of different people to ride.

It doesn't directly serve your needs for riding, but there are some indirect needs being served... alleviated traffic and parking for example. ;)

So I can best patronize the streetcars by continuing to drive? :wink: I've mentioned my aversion to the streetcars due to a lack of a comprehensive plan in other threads so I'll spare you all here. But I think it would go a long way for a lot of people if they knew that there was something coming their way down the road. You could then say This line doesn't serve me but the phase 2 includes a line through my neighborhood so I'm going to take this every opportunity I get. Currently, all I can say is that there is lip service given to more lines going in somewhere at some time but we don't know where that is or how real of a plan that is. I will qualify that by saying that I'm not that up to date on all the streetcar stuff and a plan may have come out that I've missed. If so, please enlighten me.
You slow bitches are always cloggin up my drive to work, it'll be nice to have you off the roads.
