Curious if they will allow smoking in the casino and whether they will have a cutoff time for alcohol in the evenings.

Columbus enjoys a powerfully broad base of opposition. The startup anti-casino citizen group already made front page news in TOP and one of the most trusted elected officials in the history of our city, Auditor Hugh Dorrian, published an op-ed piece in Sunday's Dispatch, linked below. I believe Mr. Dorrian's last such published opinion was in opposition to the trash burning power plant, and he was right then, too.
Don't dismiss the depth and breadth of power when citizens join together with the business community (Wexner, Gee et al) and have the daily newspaper on their side. Mr. Mike Curtin has a beautiful op-ed in Sunday's paper too, linked below (sry for the long addresses).

I really like Philadelphia's attitude about this. The casino operators may have picked up their licenses, but THE PEOPLE decided that they were going to give them so much hell that they'll never get one built. On top of that, they've forced the would-be operators to waste millions of dollars. THAT's the attitude we need to take with Penn National. We need to show them that they picked the wrong place, the wrong town and the wrong people to mess with!Uhhh, I wouldn't use Philly as a model.
The casinos are going up.Not if I can help it... I do not want them here. Franklin County doesn't want a casino. Time to step up people. I'm going to do whatever I can to stop this.

Governor is cities' ace in hole:

If a Columbus opt-out amendment would get put on the ballot, would it only need a simple majority? I would think this would be an easy win, as why would Cleveland & Cincinnati vote to force a casino on Columbus. And we already know the majority here is against it.

Sounds like Chuck Hootman will be on WOSU in a few minutes to discuss opposition to the casinos.

"Strickland made the comments after casino developers offered state lawmakers a draft of legislation that must be passed during the next six months to implement the constitutional amendment authorizing casinos that Ohio voters approved Nov. 3."
So, if legislation isn't passed in the next 6 months, there won't be any casinos?
Posted 2 years ago # -
no.
This is different legislation, this is legislation setting up some more specific guidelines on the implementation of the amendment from my understanding.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Hmmm.
Then I wonder why it gives a 6 month restriction, and uses the language "implement the constitutional amendment".
As in, if it isn't passed, the amendment isn't implemented, right?
Posted 2 years ago # -
No, as in the legislature has a constitutionally mandated obligation to pass implementing legislation within 6 months. Of course, they could treat this like school funding... Just sayin.

Strickland: Amending constitution to opt out of casino not best option
Monday, December 7, 2009
BY JOE HALLETT
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCHA possible constitutional amendment that would permit Franklin County to opt out of a casino development might not be the best way to thwart one in Columbus, Gov. Ted Strickland said today.
"I think there are maybe other approaches that could achieve the desirable result without going that route," Strickland said.

why?

I am more interested in the fact that if they get a 24 hour alcohol permit for the casino (and yes they are trying under code 4303 or similar), if it get's extended to other places like restaurants and bars like they did for hockey for beer. You mean to tell me that DUIs are less common in casinos than other locations?

smoking ban exemption would be sweet, also.
Michigan got one,i don't see why they can't get one here.
