From a press release
New York City director Gary Beeber announces the Columbus film premier of his feature documentary film Dirty Martini And The New Burlesque on Saturday November 27th at 9pm at Wall Street nightclub, dubbed "the home of burlesque", in central Ohio. Beeber is taking his latest film to a wider audience, the first film premier having taken place in New York City in June to rave reviews.
The Ohio screening will be accompanied by live performances by Ohio's own burlesque stars.
Columbus burlesque queens Viva Valezz!, Bella Sin, Pandora Foxx and Rumor Mills will all share the stage for a unique live performance following the screening, hosted by the inestimable MC Dexter Wilde.
Dirty Martini And The New Burlesque offers a rare insight into New York City's burgeoning burlesque scene and features the original group of performers who created the "new burlesque†scene: Dirty Martini, Julie Atlas Muz, World Famous *BOB*, Angie Pontani, Bambi the Mermaid, Tigger!, Bunny Love and Jo Weldon.
The film explores their outrageous world. The movie’s seductiveness comes from its dynamic, sexy performances as well as its dark exploration of the performers' struggle to pay their bills; their quest for stable, intimate relationships; their inability to envision the future after burlesque. The relationship between sex work, burlesque and feminism are discussed.
Vintage footage of legendary burlesque influences such as Tura Satana, Lili St Cyr, Dixie Evans, Sally Rand and Dee Milo is juxtaposed with the latest innovative, modern burlesque it inspired.
The “new burlesque†is not a fad and is much more than just vintage, nudie cuties brought to life. It is performance art, modern dance and political satire. It is the new punk rock.
