By "quasi," I'm referring to a primarily veggie/plant-based diet, occasionally fish, but no poultry, beef, pork, or game...where do you go to thrown down beyond the handful of vegan/vegetarian restaurants (Benevolence, Whole World Foods, Dragonfly, Northstar) that aren't Asian, Indian or Mediterranean? Also, would very much like to hear about yummy vegetarian dishes anyone has had in any restaurant.
Please share. I'm in a food rut. And hungry.

Any restaurant of note will be able to not only accomodate vegetarians, but actively create for them.

From the best I can tell, and that's having dated a few vegetarians, almost every decent restaurant in town (particularly the ones mentioned on this site) will have fantastic options for you. For a place to start though?

Yes, Alana's is sooooooooo good. I love that place. Why not ethnic restaurants? Nazareth deli, Anatola Cafe, Thai Orchid, Hunan House, Taste of India, Happy Greek....lots of vegetarian choices. Even at Mitchells or any Cameron Mitchell restaurant you can have them prepare a custom vegetarian dish.

Andrew: Love, love, love Alana's. Sadly, I haven't made it to Basi or Rosendales yet.
Core: Always the man--completely forgot about columbusoriginals.
Lew: Love Betty's and Surly. Have heard the sweet potato and eggplant fries at Tip Top are pure deliciousness.
Enzo: Probably should've clarified the caveat about ethnic restaurants. They're my automatic go-to for tasty treats. Hence the food rut. Palek paneer, pho, miso, falafel, hummus. Soybeans in any shape...it's all so good! Had some of the best black beans and rice ever (well, almost) at Cam's, but I haven't heard of Nazareth Deli (what's the deal, Core?)
Part of the problem is I'm way to picky (only child). I like mushrooms but not the shiitake or portabello used in most veggie burgers. Love tomatoes, but they have to be diced or thinly sliced. Love olives, just not on my pizza or salad. You get the picture :wink:

Your initial post sounded you were bored with the vegetarian options and wanted something new. You need to call Alana's a few days in advance for a reservation on a weeknight and ask for the degustation menu. Explain how many courses and what your restrictions are. Then let Alana suprise you.
This is the best method for anyone actually at Alana's. She especially excels at small plates and courses. As a vegetarian, you will also maximize what she can do for you in terms of what is in season. Kevin can pair wines for you as well.

They would run out screaming "Soylent Green! Soylent Green!" after seeing a host of young boys with cherubic faces stuffing sausages to the beat of German folk music... :shock:
I think I would just about pay for a picture of the spread though. It always amazes me what you can stuff into a piece of intestine. :D

Udipi on 161 does a real interesting all-vegetarian lunch buffet.
The Thai places down on Refugee Rd (Bangkok and Pad Thai) both have veggie options as well.
