I went to my polling place which happens to be the elementary school I attended. (The ceilings are lower now.) It was about 10:00 am and the turnout was fair. But even so, it disappoints me that only half of the eligible voters will take the trouble, considering that there are places in the world where people risk death to vote.

I was in line with a guy who seemed like he would vote against whatever I was voting for, but still, even if our votes cancel each other out it's all good for the turnout numbers.

As many others have said, if you don't vote then don't whine later.

Also, if you show up anywhere to vote on Election Day, even the instant the polls open, you're not "voting early." I voted last week. I honestly can hardly believe that people actually still take the time to vote in person when absentee balloting is more convenient and allows you to actually be reviewing the down-ballot candidates' Web sites (and other news sites about those races) while you're filling out the ballot. A Facebook friend who's a mom let me know that she likes to go in person because it gives her a chance for a teaching moment with her son, which I suppose I understand, but even so, I would think that there would be a chance for a teaching moment in the home, too.

I honestly think it's about time we moved to online voting. Seriously. I can manage my finances online. I can pay bills. Heck, I can file my taxes. People are concerned with online security, but honestly, I think it's actually easier to make and track electronic trails than paper trails (as many a white collar criminal has learned to his chagrin--e-mails live on in the darnedest of places). Online voting would also make it far harder to intimidate voters, would eliminate the need for polling place workers and expensive balloting machines, would almost certainly help increase turnout, and would make life a lot more easier for working professionals.

I'm going to vote over at my polling location at Briggs High School later this afternoon. There usually aren't many lines there, but I'm feeling like I should wait until school lets out so I can find somewhere to park. And super short ballot - 2 pages total, so I should be in and out. Bummed that Issue 4 isn't on my ballot, but happy that I can at least vote for more funding for Southwestern Libraries.

Gramarye: I can understand the convenience of online voting, but don't see how it can be implemented - between needing to validate the identity of the person voting, needing to make sure no one is intimidating the voter or unduly influencing their decisions, and the numbers of oldsters who don't know how to use a computer and have no desire to learn, it just wouldn't be practical.

Voted today at the former Franklin Middle. Not hopping but not deserted --a steady trickle.

I would find it very hard to trust online voting. I like the voting machines we have now where you see your vote printed on a little piece of paper. I'm not saying that couldn't be tampered with, but at least someone would actually have to physically destroy and replace all the ballot receipts to cheat the machine.

Yeah, screw community. I can go see my neighbors when I go buy cupcakes or a latte somewhere, not when I go vote.

When I worked for CML I had a volunteen who was quite the kid, very responsible considering his family situation. This kid's now a poll worker.

How would online voting make it easier for the non working professional or people who do not have access to the internet from their homes?

Why stop with voting representatives?
Why can't we vote on every piece of legislation?

The current republic was built on the idea that your representative would be a part time job. Congressional meetings were held around planting and harvesting times. The representative spent most of their time in their home state and went in to vote for the constituants who were busy.

We have pretty much advanced beyond that point and there is no reason not to have a democratic process.

My representative would not respond to my emails and when I called her asked who I represented. Her office was confused when I said I was representing myself as one of her constitiants. Explained she didn't have time for me.
