This may have been posted already so I apologize if I am repeating old news, but I just can not believe this. The Detroit Silver Dome, a 58 MILLION dollar facility with seating for 80,000 and a 130-acre parking lot just sold for…wait for it…$580,000; about 1% of its cost.
I realize that there's maintenance cost, probably quite a bit of repair costs, etc, but my God!!!!!

"The site is now a grassy meadow and has become an important area for wildlife. Birds such as the Eastern Meadowlark, Bobolink, and Savannah Sparrow now inhabit the area. Grasshopper Sparrow and Henslow's Sparrow have also been seen on occasion. This has caused the site to become popular with local birders. There are no trails and there are currently no plans for the park to put any in. Other birds that are frequently seen are American Goldfinch, Red-winged blackbird, Turkey Vulture (Buzzard), Red-tailed Hawk, and American Kestrel."

I hear you Neil Jaye. Our own Silver Dome, City Center Mall, cost over $150 Million to build, and countless millions to structure and decorate each of the 160 or so stores - I'm guessing about an additional $30 million. It was sold compartmentally for a fraction of what it's worth as well.
Heating, cooling and lighting costs of City Center were about $180,00/month.

It was owned by the city and they were losing a ton of money. They just want someone else to deal with their white elephant and get it back on the tax rolls. The last users were the jehova's witnesses and they even found another place.
The new owners are hoping to use it for Major League Soccer. I remember how empty the Horseshoe looked when the Crew played there. The Silverdome is too big.
There is no such thing as a free puppy or a cheap stadium.

and that's not even converting it to real dollars. when you add inflation, it'll be like a quarter of a percent or something.

i agree. i hope the owners have a backup plan because i can't see the MLS giving detroit a team any time soon. there's a bunch of cities who want MLS teams and they're all better than detroit, and they probably all have better venue ideas than a busted old stadium that's way too big for soccer.
