well, it's official, Jennifer Brunner, current Secretary of State has announced her plans to run for US Senator. George Voinovich announced a few weeks ago that he would not seek re-election.
Even as someone who works in politics, Brunner's plans really have me confused. The Democrats have a great hold on the statewide positions and we know that former Speaker of the House and political mastermind, Jon Husted is running for Secretary of State. So, if that is the case, why would a safe candidate who did better than most expected, Brunner, give that seat up to be a US Senator?
The apportionment board is in danger for the Dems. With Husted definitely running for SoS and Portman running for US Senate for the Rs, the Dems have hard fought battle to keep the redistricting power.
Now for the confusing part, Lee Fisher, current Lt. Gov wants to run for US Senator as well. A primary, with 2 big names, could really tear things down the center for the Dems. Just seems, to me, like silly positioning. They have the offices, stay where you are and let the chips fall into place. Forcing it may make it easier for Republican control again.
What are others' thoughts on this maneuvering, or lack thereof?
