Movement Festival 10th anniversary

I know it's still a ways off, but a lot of people are already making plans. A lot of the hotels are going fast, and tickets should be released soon, so just thought I'd start the thread.
I've still never made the short trip up to Detroit for one of the best music festivals under the sun, but I'm bound and determined to make this year my first. Once I make it out of another WMC alive, I'll set my sights on Detroit. I expect a number of you will be doing the same. I'm years and years overdue in making this trip, but I guess late is better than never. ;-)
And so... let's throw together some info, hype, experiences, and just general discussions for all interested.

I went in 2000,2001,2003,2004 (IIRC) and 2009. I have to say it can be worth the trip, especially if you have a place to stay close to the fest. It's very nice to be able to wander back to your hotel for a quick afternoon nap.

Keep an eye on the after parties as they can make or break an experience if you're on the fence about the actual fest. There were a few to look out for like the the Interdimensional Transmissions party (No Way Back) and the Detroit Booty Bounce party (Let Me Bang) with Godfather, Deeon and Slugo. You might also want to go up Thursday and hit some of the pre-parties for a distinctly local vibe.

Like any activity, avoid going with fuckups and downers.

I may go this year. I'm not sure. Generally it comes down to who's going and who's playing, but it seems whenever I go I have a good time, or at least a few good stories.

Last year was great as I ran into people I hadn't seen in since my last trip to Detroit years ago and met with a few good new folks too.

Ive gone in '08 and '09 and definately returning for the 10th anniversary. Hopefully a giant crew is coming with this year. Been waiting for it ever since the last one ended haha.

Techno is not really my favorite EDM but DEMF is always soo much fun. I mean you can just walk around and choose which party you like best. Main stage for techno/minimal. Beatport for more of the housy stuff, and RedBull has that hiphop, ghettotech, experimental edge. I dont usually go near the underground because it sounds awful, is crowded (theres only one ramp in and out of the wiggle pit), and hot. It does usualyl have some good local artists, and a constant ravey-vibe complete with alot of breakers/glowstringing to watch.

And yes the afterparties are where its at!

In all a great weekend, for a great value. WMC is like what $150 for 2 days and in Florida. Demf $35 early bird and a 3 hours drive away. May not have the bigger more mainstream artists, but DEMF isnt the place for that, its about Detroit and TECHNO.

O and a saturday headliner is confirmed. Richie Hawtin as Plastikman Live :)

The initial lineup was posted early this week, but this was the first chance I've had to look at it.

I'm really happy so far. Lots of classic Detroit here, Inner City, Model 500, Kenny Larkin, Rob Hood, Shake and Theo Parrish. I'm also happy to see Larry Heard show up as well. Beyond that there are too many good things about this lineup to point out.

I finally got a room at the Doubletree downtown. Pumped for my first DEMF and always looking for people to kick it with. The festival is gonna be terrific, with so many djs I wanna catch.. It's going to be fun planning out a mini-schedule when the timeslots are released. Also, the afterparties are ridiculous so far... I predict sleeping will be an afterthought.

By the way, my room has a sofa bed as well, and while several people are on the fence about going, I'd be surprised if any of them commit. So, if anybody gets in a bind and needs a place to crash, lemme know. :)

I went to DEMF in 2002 - had a pretty good time. I'm not up on which DJ / electronic act is good and what isn't, so it was largely a new experience for me. However, in the underground space, I caught Mad Professor. Mad Fucking Professor. From like 15 feet away. I was blown away, and the dub just filled the space so well. Also caught George Clinton as well.

Got in last night and went to the planet-e "Film & Music" exposition at the Detroit Music Hall.

I saw the film "Timeless: Suite for Ma Dukes" which was a concert film of JDilla's music performed by a 40 piece orchestra with short backstage interviews every few songs. It was a fantastic film and very emotional. Ma Dukes (JDilla's mother) came out for the show and got a standing ovation at the end.

There was a rough cut screening of a documentary on the first DEMF in 2000 called The Drive Home. The sound and editing was rough in spots, but it was a great document of the energy surrounding the first festival. There were performance highlights by Derrick May, The Roots, Guy Called Gerald, Kevin Saunderson, MosDef, Houseshoes, Theo Parrish, Slum Village, Bone, Kenny L and on and on. It was a great reminder of how thick the lineup was that first year.

I also saw a performance of "Mad" Mike Banks's new group "Timeline". This was also fantastic and a highlight of the evening for me personally. As a funny side note, I was standing by one of the front exits which were open, and a girl wandered in from the streets and said "What is this, this is beautiful?". She had no clue about the DEMF and was completely geeked about the music she was hearing. I hope she keeps searching this stuff out.

Mad Mike and company finished out their set with an excellent live version of his signature song, "Hi-Tek Jazz" that got the crowd on their feet and dancing(note, it's really hard to dance well on an incline).

Anyway, gonna go get my wristband now. The weather is beautiful. Wish you were here.
