So, just finished the Republican Debate. Couple notes:
1. Still like McCain. He seems the most genuine of the bunch, although he's getting and will continue to get crushed on immigration.
2. Giuliani has added a new phrase to his "9/11" "terrorism!" campaign..."Ronald Reagan". Maybe I'm looking back differently than conservatives do, but the Reagan years weren't exactly great years for the country.
3. Ron Paul has everyone befuddled. They have no idea what to do with this guy, he's so far out there from everyone else...in the world.
4. Fred Thompson is a dick. Seriously. Just a dick.
5. Mitt Romney is losing, and really not liked by any of the other candidates at all.
6. Huckabee...was he even there???
Huckabee did actually have the best ZING! of the night when Romney told him to stop criticizing his position on the war and Huckabee responded "which one".

Didn't see this debate, but I like McCain most out of all of the republicans generally speaking.

I'd guess Giuliani would like for people to think that he's capable of staring down Islamic radicalism in a manner similar to how Reagan stared down the USSR.

Strangely though, his Reagan tie-ins were all not about terrorism or the war. They were about immigration and other things completely. It was truly just bizarre, I think Rudy said Ronald Reagan about 11 times.

Democrats just wrapped:
Obama: LOVED him here, as he seemed to add some fine print to the broad strokes with policy specificity and was just a really strong presence.
Richardson: Although I don't think he has a chance in hell, he kind of has a McCain thing going. Very "real" guy, very like-able, and did well.
Edwards: Hard to believe he's the same guy who was running as VP last time. He's come light years, and will be a strong dem figure in the future.
Hilary: Aggressive, combative, negative, and basically looked god-awful here.
It was like the 3 guys got together and said "let's just do this right, be friends, disagree politely, and NOT tell Hilary we're doing it!!!". She even went so far, at one point, of telling Obama that he called Edwards unelectable...like she was trying to rile them up...and Edwards basically scolded her for the negative spin and was all buddy buddy with Obama.
The whole Dem debate was like watching a bunch of smart friends having a talk really, compared to the Rep debate which was like watching everyone waiting to beat up the other guy in the parking lot later.

I enjoyed both sides of the debate. I enjoyed watching the Reps argue with each other like wolves fighting over a bone.... only to leave Rudy looking like the second coming of Hitler with his giant wall and fear tactics... and Romney looking like a smug prick who everyone hates.
I agree that McCain looks like the only one with any sense on stage... but they really know his weak spot.
I don't think Huckabee dissappeared. I think he looked calm and collected. That is what scares me about him. Looks like some suburban dad that doesn't beat his kids.. he just ignores them completely.
I also love watching Ron Paul. I think they think he is crazy.
On the Dem side... I think Hillary looked a bit angry. She also seems the most "politician-y"
Richardson surprised me by sounding reasonable... but yeah... he's got no shot.
And I thought Obama did more of the same impressive cleaver responding to criticism that he has become known for. I think he looks the most solid of the bunch.
Edwards has improved quite a bit... I just think he sounded a bit to one track about things. He kept pushing that single agenda.
I appreciate the ending question by Gibson... I thought it was a great way to draw some ounce of honesty from a group of politicians. Richardson's response was great... and I love that they all looked more like a team arguing options rather a bunch of enemies.
Good debate format. I say let the argue with each other. It shows the true colors.

Yeah, I did love the format of being so open and fairly untimed, not to mention having the back to back of reps and dems.
Hilary was just unlike-able in my mind, even when she was asked about being unlike-able.
I think Edwards probably gained the most ground, but Obama was solid enough to maintain the lead...and Hilary probably lost some. Wouldn't be surprised to see the same results in NH as Iowa.

Ron Paul would honestly be my canidate of choice, if some of his stances were not so far out there. Besides the insane shit like disbanding the FBI, Ron Paul is my favorite canidate.

I can't quite figure out what to think of Paul...but I do like how upset he's got the other guys. I think he made Thompson, in particular, seem really rattled. Every time he tried to be condescending to Paul, he looked like a jerk...which was several times. I'm similar to your thinking though, love certain things he says...but the ones I don't love are so bizarre that hate isn't a strong enough word.

Yup, some of Ron Paul's ideas are straight genius, the others, straight insane. I guess genius really does border on insanity. I was excited for Thompson to run, then after hearing him speak at various venues, I am convinced he is a bumbling idiot. I read somewhere that Nixon (a man whose intelligence I respect) said when he met Thompson he was the dumbest person he has ever met, and I believe that.

Thought Obama had a fantastic presence and made some excellent points. Also noticed the alliance with Edwards. Edwards does an excellent job appealing to emotion whereas Obama is an awe-inspiring public speaker. Could it be an Obama/Edwards ticket?
Also didn't like Hilary's negative campaigning during the debate. She looked like she wanted to go to sleep any minute, which is understandable.
Richardson made some excellent points but you're right, doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell.
As for the Republicans:
Romney is like the shady CEO. He applauded drug companies, healthcare companies, oil companies -- which will probably only work to his advantage unfortunately. He's a bigot and I think his big mouth will only fare poorly for him if he runs against Obama because of his previous battles dealing with legislation with African-Americans/gays/etc.
I agree though. If it has to be the Republicans, make it Mccain.

I was not refering to Romney making money, I was refering to the companies making money. But helping the country make money is part of the president's duty since you asked. So if the oil companies, and healthcare companies, and whatever other companies are making money, then the president is doing a good job because the average American citizen does work for a company, and does hold stock in various companies. What you want is for companies to be in bankruptcy, like the American motor companies so they can layoff workers, and cause millions of Americans to lose a huge portion of their porfolio because of the decline in stock price?

New Hampshire is full of morons, I saw an interview with a lady on some news program in New Hampshire, and she was talking about how the the priority of the next president should be to bail out those whose homes were forclosed on. This lady bought a 5000 sqf home, with 17 acres, with an ARM. Her husband was laid off and her mortgage ballooned to 9000 a month!!!!!!!!!!!
The guy filling in for Rush Limbaugh during Christmas made a great point, when everyone is making money, everyone is a capitalist. When they suffer loses they all want socialism, major investment banks included.

Well, running the government in such a manner that the business sector is prosperous *is* in the job description, and that's where Romney was going.
I can appreciate the principle of non-interference generally speaking, but the pharmaceutical business might be one group that is just begging for some oversight. They spend twice what they spend on R&D on their marketing... marketing to people that have no ability to directly purchase their product. And then they spend $61,000/yr on marketing to each and every single doctor in the US.
In other words, the majority of the money you spend on drugs is to pay for it's ads and swank golf vacation junkets for your doc.

I got it. But if he wants to discuss improving the business sector, he should be focused on the businesses that need help. Last time I checked, big oil doesn't need anymore government assistance.
