I'm sure there's another thread already out there for this, but I couldn't find it.
What are your favorite day trips out of Columbus? My 10 year old son and I are antsy to get out of the house, but not wanting to do the typical summer amusement/water park fare. I'm considering Cleveland or Yellow Springs, but want to hear your suggestions. We'll head out tomorrow and would like to keep it under 2.5 hours one way.
We are zoo'd and science centered out, FYI.

He totally digs weird little shops and bookstores though, so I'm thinking he might like Yellow Springs because of that. Plus Young's Dairy. He really loved Ashville, NC when we were there a few weeks ago.
Talk to me about Cleveland. I haven't been there in a few years and it's always been pretty event-driven (either arts or food/drink) when I went.

I think we've decided on Yellow Springs this time just because we want to mix in a little hiking with our day. Anyone know how dog friendly the restaurants and shops are in town? I remember lots of patios for dining, but I don't have any firsthand dog experiences there. My guy is pretty little -- 15 lbs.

There is the Vent Haven Museum in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky (just across the Ohio state line). It is a ventriloquist dummy museum and quite fascinating.

I would recommend Dawes Arboretum (about 30-40 minutes east of Columbus) and then wander up to Utica for ice cream at Velvet Ice Cream's Ye Olde Mill.
