So, I'm curious. For those of us who are still single out there, where are you meeting people? Topic came up among a couple of us seniors at the dog park last night, and shy of heading to MCL with our Golden Buckeye Cards, I'm curious about this. I'm kind of still in the "hook up" phase myself, so not looking for a serious relationship, but for those who are, what are the real options out there?
1. Bars? Great for me, as I'm in the hook up phase. I can't say I've ever started a remotely meaningful relationship at Spice though, and usually have given a fake name.
2. Internet? I know a lot of people, including my sister, who've found real deal relationships with things like Match.com, anyone had experiences good or bad with this?
3. Church? This is, of course, the old standby of where you're supposed to meet singles...but I really don't like church or god stuff much, and most importantly I don't like most of the people who do.
4. Work? I have met my last two live in relationships through work, both were employees. It obviously comes with it's own set of tangles for sure, and they seem to get progressively more tanglesome. Is this a real option for most people?
5. Grocery Store? Another old standby, and I can admit I have picked up people at the Giant Eagle. For one, it's really easy to spot singles there...and for another, you can tell a lot about them by what they're buying. (p.s. when I'm holding the banquet 6 pack of Salisbury steaks it's for Bugs).
I'm really curious about this, as I have several single friends ranging from 25 to 45 who actually don't want to be...but I just don't know what to tell them. How did you meet your S/O, where would you go about meeting them if you don't have one, etc.?

p.s. You'd think that a bunch of co-ed singles sitting at the dog park discussing this would just go home and do each other, but the dog park thing is more complex than you think.

a good question.
Bars, I never meet people in bars that I'd want to hook up with, let alone date.
Internet, I have, but more often than not I find the person and I are looking for something different.
Church, no.
Work, HELL no. Did that once, and not again (helps that I don't find anyone that interesting enough to date at work)
Anytime I've met anyone that was worthwhile was randomly, which doesn't help if you're prowlin'. I'm thinking I should even give up looking entirely. Not that if something random did pop up that I'd say no to it, but looking has become entirely dissapointing for me.
I have a friend who is a single mom who is also having trouble finding dates, her stories of the past 6 months of going on a series of first dates are just a comedy of errors. She's meeting them through an online personal ad and through work.
ah well, being alone isn't so bad, as there is nobody around to drive me crazy. :)

LOL...I'm not looking to date you Lisa, I don't think I could afford the restaurant bills...or looking for judgment on my lifestyle. I am, however, looking for real advice on how to direct my 20's and 30's friends who are looking to meet people.
Now, go eat a meal...gain a few more pounds...and write a blog about it, I'm busy here.
p.s. How's that for radical honesty? Better or worse?

This is the thing that is perplexing me... I mean... people at bars are either gross alcoholics or, well, they're attached and looking for a night out. Go out to see a band? "Oh, I'm just here to see my friends band"... and they're attached. Church? The fear there is that they'd school me, no? I've heard it said "Oh, well, later in life its all about commonalities, and meeting people usually happens when you're stuck in some place or activity or thing" ... I've actually met some cool people over the net, but for whatever reason it doesn't work, so I may still try that... but with that I guess I need to get more into self portraits or something, heh...
I think work could be good, but unfortunately I work with people that mostly > 10 years older than me, so that could be odd.
My thing is that I don't really have many friends in town, but I keep hearing if you just plug away and focus on your life, that someone will happen about... so I've been trying to go see more bands I like, trying to learn more franÃƒÂ§ais, but for the most part, I say sod it all, and just watch more TCM and get stoned ;p

LOL...I've just gotten turned onto a show on TCM (I think) called Madmen btw Thom and anxious to check it out as a single guy ;)
Seriously though everyone, apart from the tiny flame war, this is a really sincere topic and I'd love to hear some real responses. I can safely say I have no clue how to advise people.

Actually Motorist, since you ask, yeah...I've had some seriously crazy stalker types over the years. If I want to just hook up, that's that, and it's easier when they can't possibly contact me later.
As to the second part, I'm trying to do that right this second actually with 2 of them, so funny timing. That said though, my group of friends is a pretty eclectic bunch from all facets of lifestyle and most of them really just don't suit each other.

p.s. AGAIN, this isn't about MY dating lifestyle. It's freaky enough and just fine the way it is. I"m asking for real advice from people who are meeting or trying to meet someone for more than just a one night stand.

I pursue activities and groups that I'm passionate about and hope to find a equally passionate woman along the way. I worry that Columbus isn't exactly a beacon for things I'm passionate about and the dating pool may be rather shallow. I get rather angry about the pick-up bull shit and negs. Wish more women were looking for genuine guys, rather than falling for that bull shit. For some reason I feel like on-line dating is a desperate last attempt for people in their 30's?? That is probably a gross generalization though.
Parking spaces- all the good ones are taken and the rest are handicapped

What about parties?
I'm not talking about 400+ person keggers, just chill, low key gatherings of 15 - 25 people. In this environment you have a chance to meet new people and get to know them a little bit (as opposed to the loud music bar where conversation is almost impossible). The whole point of a party is to be social, so its a lot easier to engage someone and strike up a conversation. Also, I think people are a little bit more themselves (especially after a few drinks) at a party, especially if they know a few people already.
So, theres my suggestion to be taken or left - parties.

I would recomend all women read The Game and know when you are being played. It is kinda a fun read- It has been on the NY times best seller list for a while.

core, j and i met because we had colleagues in common. they had spoken about setting us up, but decided we were too different and it wouldn't work. 5+ years together, 2+ married. moral - don't let friends decide relationships for you.
otherwise, it falls into the work/set-up categories.
