I don't know about you (whoever is reading this) but I find this site much more useful than reading the newspaper. I have found things on here way before they ever hit the Dispatch. Props to Walker for reinventing the wheel in Columbus!!!!

Yeah I've had fun publishing articles here, on things the Dispatch has covered later.

Seems to me it's developed into a mostly healthy and fruitful symbiotic relationship between Columbus Underground and Columbus MSM news outlets.
Walker/CU brings a lot to the table. As a well informed, well connected, respected public citizen, Walker advances story ideas that otherwise might not capture the attention of the Dispatch and other print media. It's no secret that Columbus MSM follows CU closely; plenty of stories are sourced straight from here.
And in turn, Walker links selected Dispatch stories, bringing them to the attention of non-newspaper readers as well as providing a forum for generally civilized comments the Dispatch sadly lacks in their Topix (we call it 'Toxic') pages.
I want to give props to the Dispatch Metro desk, they deserve it. Caruso, Bush, Vitale, Ferenchik and others (notably features writer Kevin Joy and travel writer Steve Stephens) are excellent journalists; stories like today's features on police/fire staffing and the alarmingly inadequately funded street maintenance budget might not be the sexiest issues, but many Columbus taxpayers are glad to see them find their way to the Sunday edition.

i like this site a lot,it promotes public involvement in the political process, and volunteerism in this city.
a lot of people in this town do not take advantage of either, mostly because of apathy and lack of knowledge. But,this seems like an urban Columbus site.
this site needs to me more inclusive, and not just exclusive to a part of town that has been turned into a commercial armageddon.Walker needs to broaden the scope, and step outside the urban bubble and see the rest of this town, and show it's assets.
for example, not all of Columbus cares about a bankrupt condo complex in short north,or the Bluejackets going out of business.
These people that have no interest in urban endeavors also go downtown and the short north to spend money at restaurants and businesses.

I don't think Walker "needs to do" anything. If there are topics you want to see mentioned here, you should post them. If anyone else is interested, then it will get discussed.

Props to Walker for reinventing the wheel in Columbus!!!!Thanks for the kind words. Although I do think Roy did a great job at outlining how CU is more of a compliment to the traditional media in Columbus rather than being something better/worse.
Personally, one of the first things I do every morning is open up my feed reader and scan through the headlines pulled from the Dispatch, This Week News, TOP, The Alive, NBC4i, WBNS, and every other local media outlet that publishes an RSS feed, in addition to local blogs and other non-traditional media outlets. I consider myself a local news junkie/nerd and I see value in consuming as much of it as possible.

These people that have no interest in urban endeavors also go downtown and the short north to spend money at restaurants and businesses.I always describe CU as being pro-urban but not anti-suburban. Personally, I find more interesting news happening in the central city, although we do regularly cover topics and events going on in the outerlying areas. Our demographic studies reveal that people who visit CU live all over Central Ohio, but are interested in what's going on in the Central City either because they work or play or have other interests in those areas.
I'd argue that the traditional tv news media "needs to broaden the scope, and step outside the crime/sports/weather bubble", but at the same time I think if there's a market for that and a market for urban topics, then why not let everyone co-exist without expecting everyone to all adapt to the same broadest range as possible.
Your example of Ibiza is an interesting choice though. We didn't give the recent apartment conversion news any more coverage than what I saw other local media outlets giving it, and yet we've had a multi-day surge in conversation here about it. I agree that not all of Columbus cares about that topic, but obviously some people do, and I'm glad that they choose to come here to discuss it.
Otherwise, Michaelcoyote is correct. If there is a local topic here being overlooked, start up a conversation. I personally discuss the things that I'm passionate about, and I encourage others to do the same.
