More students at Cols State, OSU than last winter

Columbus State had a total of 30,273 students enrolled in classes last Tuesday, the official "census" day in which schools report their student-body figures to the state Board of Regents. That's a nearly 2.3 percent increase over last year at the same time. Ohio State's main Columbus campus grew by 1.8 percent to 55,305 students.

I wander if someone will ever tap into the CSCC market and build some "student housing" with supporting retail. 30,000 students!!!! Come on.

There's alot of empty parking lots around/near campus. I don't see why not.

In the meantime, there's been a noticeable increase in CCAD students moving moving into the KLD (they're the ones carrying around the giant black portfolio cases). CSCC students are harder to identify by sight, but I do see a lot of young people walking back and forth across Spring Street wearing backpacks. It's about as close as you can get if you want to live in walking distance to school.

Keep in mind though that 30,000 is total enrollment at CSCC, and not just the Downtown campus. it is much larger than any of the branch campuses, and when you factor in staff and faculty, you've got a pretty heavy customer base for retail.

Most of the parking lots in that immediate area are owned by CSCC itself. Which means:

1. They're not empty. They get maxed out during peak hours, and a little less busy at night/weekends, but still used.

2. As a state community college, CSCC is not allowed to build residential units. I believe there is a law that would need to change first, or they'd have to sell their land to a private developer. And as a rapidly growing and land-locked campus, I don't think they're eager to sell land.

Columbus State tuition expected to increase; 1st time since ’06

After six years of a tuition freeze, Columbus State Community College is heading toward a thaw. President David Harrison told trustees in their monthly discussion session Thursday that the finance office during budget preparations is assuming that the board will not act to stop an automatic tuition increase starting with the fall term, and board members did not disagree, CFO Terri Gehr said.
