I called the city about this a few years back. At the time I was told curb replacement was an ongoing process and each area was scheduled to be replaced at X time (ie. your time might be next month, it might be two years from now) if I wanted to replace it before the schedule I would have to pay for it myself.

well that sucks for me...did you leave it or did call for quotes?

Hmmm. Does anyone happen to know what to do about a curb that's completely missing? Can I just add it back myself?

What neighborhood do you live in?

In some of the historic districts, in order to get a permit, you may get asked to replace stone curbs with stone. Merion Village it shouldn't be a problem. It's mostly an issue in German Village, where the streets are still original materials.
There is a stone curb recycling yard, where the city maintains a stock of the old stone curb for use in the historic districts.
Anyway... it doesn't really change anything, since it's just as much work to install stone as it is to pour new concrete, but just fyi, should the issue ever arise.

Mine are stone, and I'd love to replace them with stone - do I have to wait for the city to replace them, or can I go down to the recycling yard and buy it myself?

They usually don't sell it. Typically they will allow homeowners to use the stone for projects in the historic districts... not sure if you'd be able to use it for replacement if you aren't in a district. You have to get a permit through the sidewalk and curbs section in order to replace the curb... I'd suggest inquiring with them. (Wish I could remember the name of the gent that had the specifics...)

Cool. Thanks. I wish things were a bit more open and not so slanted toward those in historic districts, rather than three doors down from one.

@lifeliberty, The curbs were set to be replaced within the next year so I left it. You can contact the Public Utilities department for more info on when yours might be replaced (614) 645-8276

Awesome, thanks!
(edit)not sure about the number, goes to the water dept. they gave me the 311 #
311 is sending someone out from the streets dept to inspect, gave me a confirmation #. I guess the city pays, but they might not be able to get around to doing it, so they have some kind of reimbursement program maybe? I'll be informed of that all when they mail me the report.

Ha... well... not sure I'd call it slanted... the streetscape thing in the historic districts (especially in German Village) can be very difficult to navigate. I think the contractors often charged more to do the replacement with the stone.
The curb in front of my house is halfway crumbled. And I am dreading having to address it.
You might want to phrase it that the rest of the street has stone curb, and you didn't want your curb to look different than the curb along the rest of the street and in the historic district. if you are visible from the historic district, and really want to do the stone. Probably may depend on how much stone they have left in stock. I just don't know.

FYI, City response:
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONCERNS REGARDING STREET CURBS. CURRENTLY, THE CITY OF COLUMBUS DOES NOT HAVE FUNDS BUDGETED FOR CURB REPAIRS. HOWEVER, THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SERVICE CONTINUES TO REQUEST FUNDS FOR THIS IMPORTANT PROGRAM AND HOPE TO HAVE CURB PROGRAM FUNDING IN THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS. YOUR LOCATION WILL BE ADDED TO OTHERS THAT WILL BE INVESTIGATED AND RATED WHEN FUNDING BECOMES AVAILABLE. THE MOST SEVERE CONDITIONS WILL BE REPAIRED FIRST. DEFECTIVE CURBS MAY BE ON A LIST FOR SEVERAL YEARS BEFORE BEING REPAIRED DUE TO FUNDING ISSUES. IN ADDITION, THE CITY DOES HAVE A "CURB REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM¿ WHERE THE PROPERTY OWNER WOULD BE REIMBURSED $16.00 PER LINEAR FOOT FOR CURBS THEY REPAIR. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE CURB GUTTER IN FRONT OF THE DRIVEWAY APPROACH, AS THIS IS THE ABUTTING PROPERTY OWNER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO REPAIR PER CITY CODE, CHAPTER 905.06. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE CURB REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM, PLEASE CONTACT THE DIVISION OF PLANNING AND OPERATIONS PERMIT OFFICE AT (614) 645-7497 TO APPLY.
