Is it me or does the news media play up any crime that occurs here like it is some huge deal? A guy was shot this past weekend at the South Campus Gateway, and the local news media made it seem as though the Gateway Garage was almost not a safe place to be. Another instance, was last week. A friend of mine was shot off of Cassady Ave. We saw the report about it on television. The report goes on to talk about how police were responding to a car that was on fire, and had been shot up, and my friend drove up to them and informed them he had been shot. The media made it seem as though, there was some huge crime conspiracy and almost a organized crime related shooting, and how he refused to cooperate with the police. In reality it was a small argument, my friend was shot with a shotgun from over 10 feet away, and that is that. If you would have seen the report you would have thought that there was some huge drug war going on.

First of all, yeah... the media plays up crime A LOT. Because fear sells. I hardly think this is anything unique to Columbus though.
Secondly, yikes! That's wild that your friend was shot. Hope everything is ok.

Oh, and yeah, I saw the gateway garage story. I don't know why anyone would want to commit any sort of crime there. There's hundreds of cameras all over the Gateway and a police station inside the parking garage.

I agree. Between all the cameras, security guards, and rented police it would be the last place I would ever commit any sort of crime. Something about how the news of that shooting was reported angered me though. I don't know exactly what was said that really made me upset, but the overall reporting seemed to try and portray the Gateway as an unsafe area. Especially the way they kept referring to the shooting that took place a year before there. I never really noticed this focus on crime until the report on my friend last week, but it just seems everything is over blown. As far as my friend, he is ok, we all laughed about it after picking him up from the hospital. Everyone was amazed it took him this long too get shot, he is just that kind of person.

Now that, is crime worth being reported. It might be one of the most despicable things I have ever heard of.

I stopped watching the local news... the fear mongering is ridiculous (though not unique to Columbus) and I can't say that I feel as though I'm missing anything.

WCRS news and info is very pro-downtown.
Plus those awful electro-eyesore signs at Broad and High along with the Dispatch ticker are full of stupid crime stuff.

Killing tarnishes Gateway's safe image
Really? Does it?
Some drunken kids getting in a fight in the garage at 3am has ZERO to do with your average person's safety in visiting the stores and restaurants in the South Campus Gateway.

Honestly though? These things do have a history of having a real negative impact on facilities in Columbus (see City Center).

Recently channel 4 listed the local homicides by who did it and what race they are. I'm not sure why that is relevant except to spread more bs.

yeah, my STREET, had two shootings in two days and that was all you saw about it. No long, drawn out storylines, nothing about the search for the culprit, etc. I think the media plays up crime a lot more when it happens in so-called "white" or upper-class areas. My neighbors nephew got shot at the corner store in what really WAS a drug-related crime and nothing on teh news.

My friend was shot on 5th and cassidy, hardly a white neighborhood at all. My friend is black, the guy who shot him was black, and it was all over the news and played up to be some big crazy drug thing. The central eastside (as in east 5th)area is the worst in the city right now, 3 murders in a 2 block radius in the last month and a half alone, with god knows how many aggravated assaults. I would walk down 22nd st. in a blue t shirt from whittier to main, before I would go around cassidy and 9th alone without a weapon.

Shooting and killing is so sad. They need to go for a run out in the middle of nowhere until they calm down and let go of such resentments. Spiritual sickness that can only be cured by spiritual development. They shoot and kill someone and they still have the anger and resentment. It is an inside job. Drugs and alcohol often make a resentment increase 10 fold. I hate to hear about this and wish the world were different.

Well, sorta. You don't get the whole "scoop" on these crimes. Details are fairly important. For example, I'd like to know if a burglary was a home invasion or a garage invasion to determine the level of severity.

Yep. He did.

It does come in waves though. Earlier this year, every news trailer I saw was about shootings, murders, drugs or corrupt police in the various small towns around Columbus.
Core is right though - perception really killed City Center.

Gateway safe, police sayTom Knox
Issue date: 4/18/08
As patrons walk into the South Campus Gateway parking garage, they might get an eerie sense of being watched, and for good reason - cameras are monitoring their every move.
There are approximately 100 cameras at the Gateway, about 50 of which are in the five-level garage. At least one security member is always watching the cameras from the security office on the first floor of the garage, said Gateway general manager Jim Heinen.
During peak hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, at least three security staff members are on duty, along with four special duty Columbus Division of Police officers.
In the security office, the staff has two individual monitors that show smaller video feeds from which they can separately watch all of the Gateway. There are four monitors in the office situated in a square shape that security can focus on. The footage can rotate based on demand for certain sites at different times.
