If you call 645-4545 to report a theft, breaking and entering, etc, prepare to argue until you are blue in the face. Seems they'd rather let you talk to an automated computer at 645-4717. Nice. So, the thugs that keep stealing stuff out of my back yard and vehicles probably know this, and they know it won't be followed up on.
I'm over it. I'm very tempted to bait and wait, deal with the thief my own way.
We have some crazies that dig in the dumpsters daily, one which is very brazen approaches people for money. Since the "discovery district rent-a-cops" have taken the stand that dumpsters are public domain, the bums have gone from few to many. My neighbors and I believe that they wait till night time to start peeking in windows and trying door handles. Over time I've had more than 3k worth of merchandise stolen, but since it wasn't a one shot deal I get to talk to the automated line.
Anyone else annoyed with some of our city policies that seem to stick it to us rather than the criminal?

question is, if you know people are stealing stuff out of your backyard and vehicles, why are you leaving stuff in your vehicles and not locking up stuff in your backyard?
don't leave anything in your car or backyard that you would miss if it were stolen, I've learned this lesson 3 times through car break-ins since living in columbus.
and you are right, CPD does not care about property crimes unless it is occuring right then or if you have a lead to give them.

There should be CPD liason officer for your neighborhood/precinct that you can talk to. Better in more normal hours and even better if it is a group of you.
An ounce of prevention? Cameras are cheap. Install a couple to document who it is. I *think* you can take this direct to the prosecutor's office.
Not to defend CPD, but that is just the way things are. A proactive approach is more likely to get results.

Start making your dumpster unattractive to the guys dumpster diving. Don't you have some barbed wire that you need to pitch on a regular basis? What else could you throw away that makes it miserable to rummage through the dumpster? A lot of dog crap?
I'm pretty sure that even if you have it on film, there's not much they can do. I know people who have recorded drug deals and the police say they can't use it.

I've had everything from a grill, to doormats and even a potted plant stolen - mostly all in the last month. It has to be the same people, at first when it was little shit I just ignored it - hey I live downtown, right? But now with the camera it has pushed the price over the top, and my temper.
Just for you, Ndcent: fucktard, cockdrooling, shiteating mother fucking son of a god damned piss drinkin goat fucker ..... I don't know any good ones, I'm more of a F-word kinda guy. :roll:

Different thing. A taped drug deal isn't really evidence of crime w/o proof of drugs.
A theft of property crime reported is and then it has video evidence.
I strongly suspect the actual thefts and the dumpster partakers are discrete sets. Most of the serious thievery is more organized w/ a van driver to carry stuff. The goal w/ video and a trip to the prosecutor or is not so much jail, but to make the threat of it real enough for the perps to move on.

although, OTOH, anytime I've ever called CPD they've showed up. I'm a fan of CPD I'll admit, but they are limited. I'm a fan of vigilante justice, CPD is only a phone call away, but by then it is too late and there is nothing they can do.

I've always wondered where this shit goes. With all the potted plants that get stolen off of porches and landscaping just pulled out of the ground, the crack houses should look like Franklin Park Conservatory.

You know, the potted plant one really threw me. What do they do? Walk around town carrying a green pot full of orange lillies to hock at a pawn shop?
I re-potted all of my lillies now into a HUGE pot with gravel in the bottom and some bricks. If they want to haul that off they can have fun trying.

We are still wondering on that one. Last summer, we had one hanging basket and one spider plant in a copper pot taken (while leaving the other copper pot.) Go figure.
We had attributed these to "students" in need of apt decor for lack of any better rationale, but an early morning jogger spotted a truck accompanied by a couple of people on foot casing out stuff. The footpads jumped in and the truck sped off. Sounds more organized, but still leaves the mystery as to what end this is.

not that I condone this but in November? I believe you can legally shoot and kill someone breaking into your home...not sure if that relates to your whole property or just your house...I guess the law now is that you have to feel your life is being threatened? Anybody know anything about this or know what the exact wording is on this law?
I think the dog poo and the cat's litterbox cleanouts keep our trash from being gone through on a regular basis. I also add in some garden waste when I clear out prickly weeds... the rest I sort into a garden waste trash bin.

I'm should go to a meat market and ask them for their garbage. Rotting meat containers baking in the dumpster. But, I don't think all alley bums are bad since they pretty well fuel a lot of the recycling that goes on. I'm always floored by how many cans they pull out of dumpsters. Don't people know any better?

castle doctrine. if you shoot someone inside your house. basically you are not required to retreat from your house, if you shoot someone if you life is threatened (don't shoot them in the back unless they are walking backwards to get you) it is up to the person shot to provide proof that you are in the wrong, not the other way around of you having to prove your inocence.(burden of proof is on buglar)

Ive never really had a problem when Ive called. One night a few months ago, there were 2 unknown guys just sitting in a car for like 2 hours. I had never seen them before and didnt recognize the car. I finally called and reported it, and the cops were there questioning those guys in less than 15 minutes. In the end, one of them got arrested and the car was towed. I had quite an intresting show from my spare bedroom window!

a few things I have observed from radio traffic:
1) since the city is arranged in zones (1-5), and the number of officers in each precint within each zone seems to be based partly on geography/logistics and partly on crime stats for each area, there are some zones where a call of a "48" (suspicious looking dude) gets an instant response and some zones where the officers are too busy handling the seemingly never ending series of domestic dispute calls, fights, and burgler alarm runs so that less urgent calls are put into the que and MAYBE someone will find a moment to deal with them. Which leads to...
2) if you call the non emergency number they assume this is one of those "less urgent" calls and it seems you get a switchboard operator and not a dispatcher. If it is "in progress" call 911 and not the non emergency number.
3) They really do try pretty hard and it sounds like at least some of them really do care.
I've been amazed at some of the things I have heard. e.g. The other night someone broke into the UDF down the street from me. Within a moment of the alarm company calling, the chopper was overhead and the crook was trapped inside. A few minutes later he was arrested by the two cruisers who showed up.
4) amazingly, they actually do try to catch the people who break into cars. I have heard traffic from people in unmarked cars staking out apartment complexes where they have had a lot of complaints. I suspect it takes a LOT of complaints to get on that list.
5) they seem to enjoy their jobs for the most part. Don't think I could do it. Some of the stories I have heard them telling each other make it sound like a pretty thankless and difficult job.
6) There really are a million stories in the naked city. Some nights they're pretty weird and some nights pretty dull.
