:smacking forehead: Why, oh why do I ever read the comments section on Dispatch stories?
Nice move by the county.

The thing is, as bad as those comments are--and they are TERRIBLE, don't get me wrong--the proportion of well-reasoned comments to batshit crazy ones isn't as awful as I've seen it on other Dispatch stories. I know it's a manpower issue, but the Big D really needs someone whose job it is to vet that stuff.

How long will it take for the city of Columbus to follow suit and approve domestic partner benefits?

Yeah, most of the comments were sane.
A few, however, sounded like they'd just come from this guy's brainwashing:

What is a domestic partner, exactly. If I share a home with my brother/sister/friend/mom/dad are we "domestic partners"? Or does it have to be same-sex sexual? Is there proof required?

We have domestic partner benefits at work for same-sex couples. At first it was open to all 'domestic partners', but it was defined in a way that allowed people to add parents, grandparents, etc. Now, if you are opposite sex, you have to get married, but I have no problem with that rule.

I always wonder how they define "domestic partner". I say this as someone who is definitely not an expert in how these policies are written, but it sure seems like it would be easy to fake if you just wanted to score a friend some free benefits.

In my experience, you have to provide proof that you've lived together for a certain amount of time.

I understand extending domestic partner benefits to same-sex couples since they can't get married, but for purely equality's sake I'd like to see those same domestic partner benefits extended to opposite-sex couples without marriage provided the same preconditions ( whatever they are ) apply.

If it's a small amount of time, say less than 4 years, I can think of multiple guys I know who would have roommates that would qualify while simultaneously having long-time (>18 months) committed girlfriends or fiances who would not. Doesn't necessarily change whether or not the policy is a good idea, but it is a quirk of the system if the goal is to "reward" family units.

I've been with the same guy for 6+ years. I don't really see a reason to tell opposite-sex couples they have to marry for those benefits.

I guess it would be unfair to require opposite sex "domestic partners" to either get married, or show any kind of proof of longevity if you aren't going to make the same-sex folks to do the same...wouldn't that be reverse discrimination? Is there a such thing as "reverse discrimination?" Regardless, it's all discrimination...

Wow very progressive, I especially like that this isn't about religious doctrine or dogma it is just about helping all people in less then leave-it-to-beaver situations. Thats what I think we lose track of in this debate, this helps everyone not just people with a certain genetic propensity.
