I made slamming suggestions that COTA to offer that program and offer free rides but I looked at http://www.cota.com and surprised they didn't want to offer free rides, what a shame!
This shows unprofessional COTA is!

:? (that's the "confused" emoticon)
I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. The assertion that a transit agency is unprofessional because they won't give you free rides is more than a little silly.
wow.
a. this isn't news
b. you expect them to respond you your "slamming suggestions"
c. you think this is a place that will get behind you in this?
c1. AND You start a new thread here about it after you already have one?
this is like me saying:
stupid tigertree needs to give out free wallets for wallet day. They're dumb if they don't do it.
and they don't. because they're a business. And you come back and criticize them as unprofessional because they didn't respond to your asinine request?!
get over yourself.
I would appreciate a professional post, in the least.
Can we roll this into that other prior thread so I can ignore both of them at the same time?
I want FREEE web hosting you got that covered unic host?

What I am trying to say COTA didnt give free rides because most other TA in the nation does that, but why not COTA?
I'm seeing the list here of participating Transit Authorities, but it doesn't specify which ones are doing "free ride" days and which aren't:
http://www.publictransportation.org/contact/stories/default.asp
Do you have a list of which ones are participating in that?

If most of them are participating in the "free ride" gimmick, then I too would chide COTA for opting out. But if only several of them are participating, then it sounds like COTA is participating the same way that most other TAs are.
I still stand by my previous statement that a "free ride day" sounds like a "don't buy gas day". It's a cheap gimmick with minimal results.
If COTA wants to improve ridership numbers (which they've been doing in the past year very well, actually) then they need to do more than offer a free ride to the public one day a year. Education and outreach needs to be done, which sounds like is the meat and potatoes of what this whole Dump the Pump campaign is all about anyway.
I'm really not sure why you're getting so hung up on the free ride day thing. The last thing COTA needs to do is be out a day's worth of fares, and have a day full of overcrowded busses and the customer complaints that would ensue. Sounds like a lose-lose for them.

Well,
I understand your point but I used work for a transit authority in the past and I learned how to lure people to use the bus system by giving free rides like Dump the Pump, Holidays, Anniversary and such will help educate people why public transportation is very important to the community because it helps carry people to places where they need to go.

It's 50-50 on how bad this will hurt or help COTA. If done right, with good customer service, maybe a handful of extra buses and drivers to accommodate the demand in certain areas, COTA could do well to offer this to the city. Someone who may be hesitant to hop on a normal day, might not see any loss if a product is free and doesn't meet expectations. A free, crappy meal is still free. Chipotle seems to do pretty well with their free product promotions.
I agree that you could probably get more people to try out the service and some might keep riding. I would have to see an economic analysis to determine if the benefits outweigh the costs. It would be interesting to see if some other transit agency has data on how much ridership they gained by offering free rides for one day. I would worry though that the promotion could strain an already crowded system that has been very successfully adding riders anyway, which would give people a very negative impression of transit.
I think Comfest and Red, White, and Boom will encourage more people to try COTA than a free ride day. Who has ever complained COTA is too expensive as a reason for not taking the bus? No one I know.
somertimeoh wrote Who has ever complained COTA is too expensive as a reason for not taking the bus? No one I know.
Fine, i'll say it. COTA is too expensive. I miss the days of paying $9 a quarter and riding unlimited "for free"
possibly they could do the same thing with Columbus that OSU does, charge every taxpayer an amount per quarter and then give everyone a pass to ride unlimited.

orrrrrrrr not
I dont use the bus around town, don't think i'll ever get on it either, so I'd rather not pay to ship you all around town :P
Plus gas prices are higher now. Unless you see COTA turn all their busses into the Natural Gas busses...I seem to see plenty traditional gas busses around still. Akron/Cleveland has mostly converted their fleets to NG.
I don't use it either, but I might if I didn't have to worry about correct change or money at all(to ride the bus)
the OSU way of riding COTA gave most OSU students a taste of how easy that system is. Before the OSU system i never rode the bus, but Once I did I realized it was rather easy to use to get around, then my buck ID got too old, so no go...therefore no bus riding.(there are other reasons such as timing issues and routes, the but buck ID thing worked great!)
Or we could just have a rechargeable metro card with an option to pay a flat fee for 1 month of unlimited use.
O, wait, I forgot that I can't think progressively when it come to transit in Columbus. We'll get it sometime in the next 30 years with the long range plan.
