So, this story is more than just a "hey I saw a famous person" story. So if you don't want to read the setup, you can just skip to the end.
But, if not, here's the beginning.
I was at the Singing Dog record store yesterday, itself an oddity, as that's the record store in town I frequent least. It was relatively empty, just me and my friend, the clerk, a blind lady sitting down and talking to the clerk, and some other random guy.
The random guy was talking to the blind lady and the clerk. It being a music store, the topic eventually turned to that subject. Random Guy mentions he is a musician. The following conversation ensues:
Clerk: Oh really? Are you in a band?
Random Guy: No. Well, not really. Not exactly.
Clerk: What do you mean?
Random Guy: Well, I'm Ben Folds.
They keep talking. Turns out Random Guy/Ben Folds was staying downtown, and he took COTA up to campus to go to the record store.
Like I said, this is more than just a famous person sighting story. What I found interesting, and encouraging, is that he had taken COTA. That's the type of thing that always gets talked about in any discussion of streetcars/light rail: how it'll make it easier for out of towner's to get around and visit places further from where they're staying. But, as it is, either Ben Folds is really resourceful and adventurous, or someone at the hotel he's staying at encouraged him to take the bus. Either way, that's a good thing for COTA.
(Incidentally, not knowing what Ben Folds looks like, my friend and I had no way of knowing if Random Guy was taking advantage of the blind lady and lying about who he was. After we left the store, we looked up a picture of Ben Folds on my friend's iphone. It was him.)
