Batten down the hatches and head for the hills! NASA reports that a Coronal Mass Ejection event, thatÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s a large solar storm, is headed for the Earth. Orbital satellites and observatories have detected a huge solar flare caused by a geomagnetic storm on the Sun on Sunday, ejecting a massive wave of gas and particles into space. This solar tsunami been rated as a C3-class event and originates from Sunspot 1092, which is currently facing the Earth. What does this mean to you?

I hope I get to see the Northern Lights. It's a lifelong dream of mine. Other than that, I can live without TV, cell phones and radio for a few days, but I doubt it would come to that.

I would love to see them too. It wasn't too long ago that they were visible in Ohio.

This might be a good oppurtunity to find out what tall nearby tall buildings have observatory areas open at night or find a wide clear place up north in a field to view them.

Unfortunately, it's cloudier than all get out today and I'm not sure that the next couple of days will be any better.

I bet the clouds would help protect us some, no?

a few things...

1) a "c" class xray flare is not unusual. We've had larger flares recently. M and X class... now that's some serious business. Also, x-ray flares do not always mean CMEs.

2) Even on absolutely clear night, seeing aurora (or anything else in the sky) in or near columbus is unlikely simply due to the staggering light pollution. Seriously Irritating.

3) Already hitting for the last 3 hours. Proton flux is nicely up and magnetic field is reacting.

4) This minor hickup is unlikely to do anything anyone will notice, unless you're like me and enjoy looking at graphs like the one shown above.

5) "The recent years of cool temperatures does seem to be linked with the lack of sunspot activity." oh puhleeeze. Do we really need to go into this discredited idea based on a bad study that was shown to be rife with cherry-picking of regional data to produce the desired 'global trends' and statistical nonsense based on the old Dutch records of sunspots, data points of which were also cherry picked to match a desired 'trend'? I think not.

6) WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE ZOMBIES?!

currently this is causing a K6 (low-moderate) geomagnetic storm.

Shortwave radio propagation is slightly hinky. Radio Taiwan, usually strong and clear, is... jumpy.

Someone might see an aurora north of here tonight, maybe in Toronto. If it gets up to K7 we have a small chance of seeing it here. well, except for the skyglow from the city lights and the clouds...

There were some light flashes in the sky a minute ago... about 2:48am EST.

No visible aircraft. Vic Village area.

Edit:
Again 2:55am EST.
North facing window.

Looks like lightning from about 50 miles away according to radar.

That would explain the lack of thunder.
