A little quirky but interesting. I'd like to see these around town.

David Byrne bicycle racks? Everything that guy touches turns into awesome.
That's a terrible bike rack. We need functional bike racks. The U-shaped one work best. Why don't we make artsy car parking spots that are uneven surfaces outlined with different geometric shaped instead of parallel lines?

Maybe money? Let's not get greedy, at least there are bike racks, now we just need to teach people how to ride a bike. :D

Yeah, as public art, those are nice, but as bike racks they seem like they would suck...
U racks FTW

Is there an emoticon showing something going over some one's head?
i think we should do this, but the center top one, exclusively... :D although maybe these kinds of things could be commissioned from local artists by private companies to add some spice to their sidewalks... or maybe the city could hold a competition hehehe... i dunno could be cool
Just build statues and other standard public art if you want this kind of stuff, but don't call it a bike rack.

+1 these racks are a waste of space as a rack. two bike capacity? come on.
art is nice and all, but lets get some FUNCTIONAL stuff done. In this town we need bike racks that work. We also need public transport, we need to rebuild our industrial and manufacturing infrastructure, we need new sewers, we need a LOT of functional and REAL working stuff.
"Art" is nice as the icing on the cake, but you need to bake the friggin' cake first, or at least do "art" as part of making functionally working items look cool while they also perform their function well (a la new main street bridge).
Sorry, it's a pet peeve of mine when people put form in FRONT of function.
some of us, including myself, regularly complain about the lack of public art in this city. i thought the reception for these would be a little more positive. it's cheap and simple and kind of cool. as far as the shapes and only accomodating two bikes, the standard U-shaped ones only accomodate two bikes. i also do agree that we should put funds more towards the bigger projects that this city so desparately needs, but these things probably cost next to nothing in comparison.
it couldn't hurt to put a few out there. put a couple of guitars in front of skully's, a dollar sign in front of a bank. people would use them if they knew they were bike racks.
a city should implement anything to set itself apart from its neighbors, whether it be the tallest highrise, vibrant communities, streetcars, tech corridors etc. and yes, even artsy bike racks. it all counts. unfortunately, most of our competitor cities already have all of those things and then some.

All I'm saying is to put FUNCTION first and THEN make it look good.
like this...

They're not very good as art either.
Would the average person even recognize these as bike racks - as opposed to public art - if there was no bike locked up against it? I remember seeing a couple of these back home and I never would've guessed they served a purpose other than an aesthetic one.

Jeff at CB is working out something over the next year or two with, I believe CCAD, for bike racks and public art.
well there you go. not such a dumb idea after all.
From what I understand the idea will be to make functional and replicable bike racks and also offer something else in the way of one off public art that a business could commission.
Awesome Idea

Thats probably the best thing about Consider Biking. We have a lot of very active, very passionate and very vocal individuals who represent a wide variety of ideas and opinions, experience and bike subcultures. It helps Jeff and others to have the feedback from real experience to address the real needs, rather than do feel good measures that have to be corrected later on.
Look for a good usability map of the Columbus region in the next year and some other things.

I will. Now that my knees are closer to fixed I fully intend to ride more.
