Does anyone know what's going on? Most of it seems concentrated in that weird little black top right on the Southwest corner of the mall, but this morning they were digging in the grass just north of it too.

they are also cutting through the concrete in front of isabellas on State st, don't know if that is connected to the other construction or not.
looks like they have huge sewer pipe, so maybe some infrastructure for people to be living downtown.

At some point they are removing the skywalk. Is the construction near there?

It is, but it seems weird for them to be digging in the ground about 200 feet south of there for that to be what it is for.....there are a fair amount of people working on it for such a small area.

no, it's in the middle of the grassy field, by the grassy knoll.
where there was once talk of putting the ice rink during winter.

i'm guessing it's for the upgrade and installation of new sewer pipes or whatnot to handle the current and future mass development down there. or maybe casto is finally going to build his apartments he announced 50 years ago.

Hmmm...my interest is piqued now. There are some large steal beams and an ass load of wood at the site now.

maybe it's the hub of a citywide streetcar/light-rail system running from Downtown, through the core neighborhoods, to Powell, Grove City, Pickerington and Hilliard!!
then again, if it were, walker would have a heart attack. and i like having him around.
i hope it's a Downtown skate park.
either way, i'll call mike brown tomorrow. he'll know something.

Perhaps it's just construction equipment storage for the other nearby projects underway?

they are definitely digging and installing stuff. almost the entire area is torn up and being put back together.

i am intrigued by this. hopefully it pans out into something.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I think if something important were happening, we would have heard about it by now...

Not necessarily ... it could be important but not flashy. The latter is what tends to get attention.

i think it might just be updating and maintanence in the underground.
You'd figure Walker would know since he runs the Underground? :)

they're probably upgrading utilities and such for the condos that are being constructed a block away...

Agreed. Still curious though.

That's what I thought at first, but as of yesterday afternoon there were a few large steel beams at the site, and 2 or 3 pallets of wood.

Just got off the phone with Mike Brown, the city's urban ventures coordinator. He said that the hubbub near City Center is underground utility work, including sewer revamps, that is coinciding with nearby projects in RiverSouth.
Sadly, it's not a streetcar terminal.
In a related note, the parking lot just south of Rich Street, on the east side of High Street, was redone to accomodate state jobs that recently moved Downtown into the Lazarus Building.

Walker, when are you going to institute the "Ask John Ross" column we discussed several months back?

Very soon! :D

Well I just got off the phone with Ted Strickland, and he said they were working on the new City-Center slam-ball foam-pit climbing wall trampoline skate park dance floor slash streetcar terminal.
