Reports are conflicting - some say dead and some say in surgery. What a shame.

I've been following the story on Twitter. It's scary and heartbreaking all at once.
My prayers go out to the victims and their families.
I'm hoping this was a random lunatic and not a political junkie, but Giffords was "cross-haired" on a certain political website. This graphic has been taken down in the last hour:
Oh, UGH, here's another graphic, this time directly from Gifford's political opponent. I know, it's all a metaphor that looks worse in retrospect, but it was in poor taste seven months ago:
Arizona law enforcement official:
A person in the crowd shot back at the gunman.
U.S. District Court Judge John M. Roll, among others, are confirmed dead in this shooting. This is going to be a federal case.
Wait, now I'm hearing he isn't confirmed dead. It'll still go to federal court.

Figure it's federal even for the attempt, no?
Also...

In March, U.S. District Judge John Roll rejected a motion by Mr. Barnett to have the charges dropped, ruling there was sufficient evidence to allow the matter to be presented to a jury. Mr. Barnett's attorney, David Hardy, had argued that illegal immigrants did not have the same rights as U.S. citizens.
Kinda wonder now who the target was. Or if it's "crazed nutjob who wanted to stop the lizard space aliens" or something, of course.
NY Times says the shooter walked up to Congresswoman Giffords and shot her in the head, then turned his semiautomatic on other people. She seems to have been the primary target.

Could be. Read other reports of firing into the crowd first. Might take a bit to sort things out.
Disgusting.
AP has released the alleged shooter's name: Jared Lee Loughner.
If that's accurate, this is likely his YouTube Channel. The name and location both match.
http://twitter.com/ABC/status/23845126283468802
The shooter who wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is being identified as 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner.
No matter who the original target might have been, the shooting of two federal officials would probably take the prosecution out of Arizona state law and directly to the office of Dennis K. Burke.

Figure so.

Not that the press is the main point of this thread, but do you think they would "love" this guy any less if his favorite books were The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People and The Black & Decker Complete Guide to Home Improvement? I think what he did is going to pretty much make him "loved" by everyone. You yourself already looked at his YouTube, right? Save the snarky digs about the press.
Disgusting. Unacceptable. Cowardly. I wish the media could present this person as a loser of such magnitude that no one would ever want to do this type of act again.

That doesn't strike me as a particularly unusual list of favorites, especially for a young man with a keen interest in politics. That he favors stories of individuals struggling against either an oppressive state or fantastic challenges is the thing I find most telling. He seems to have a soft spot for invented realities too.
Really, the only titles that are missing are "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and "On The Road", and I expect those are probably on his "to read" list.
