No one has anything to say?
I think Hilliard is kind of like the sweaty armpit of Columbus.
You know if you buy a condo in Hilliard that means you have to live in Hilliard right?
I did that for a hot second.
You couldn't pay me enough to do it ever ever ever again.
I don't know. I always kind of had an attitude about a condo. Seems like you're buying an apartment. If I'm buying property, I want it to be mine and mine alone, without attached neighbors... And with some of the condos I've seen, buying an actual house is cheaper in the long run. Plus, if you wanted to paint your house hot pink and purple, you wouldn't have to ask anyone's permission.
Eh. It's Hilliard. (Now that would be a great tourism slogan).
But seriously, I'm sure you can find plenty of cookie-cutter condo complexes built by the usual suspects that are way-overpriced and situated next to an Applebee's and some strip malls. Hilliard does have a little urban downtown, though. I would look there, if you absolutely must stay in Hilliard.
Downtown Hilliard is like a Dairy Queen, a sportsbar, and a gun store...
If you're already familiar with the geography of the area and with the various neighborhoods there, I recommend Trulia as the place to begin.
That said, I recently looked at a number of condos for my move to Akron, and decided against all of them, even with depressed prices, cheap mortgages, and the $8000 first-time homebuyer credit. The issue isn't the quality; unlike some here, I don't turn up my nose at newer builds just because they don't fit in some either gritty or ultra-modern contemporary urban milieu, or because they're often "generic."
Be sure to get a complete accounting of the costs you're going to be paying, as well as a copy of the CCRs of any unit you seriously consider. Get copies of the utility bills and condo fees, and make sure you know what kinds of services are covered by the condo fees and what aren't. (For example, some pick up trash, water, and/or sewer; some don't.)
Also, especially if you've never owned before, make sure you investigate what the property taxes will be, and do not get deflected by anything to the effect of "the property taxes are abated for x years."
Beyond that, I'd say just budget in a weekend or two to see as many units as possible. I was able to do twelve in a day with little trouble (four with one realtor, two with another, one with a third, and five open houses, all reasonably near one another since I knew the area I wanted to live in). Then start asking questions about the specific units you actually think have potential. Budget in time to walk around the neighborhood if you have a chance, too.
Pixel, if you're looking at the Lifestyles condos in Hilliard, absolutely no. I have 2 friends who own in there (different people) and both have hated it for many great reasons.
That said, Hilliard is a very affordable community with great schools, and you're close to Johnnies, Starliner, Cook Shack, and several other nice spots.
What's up with all the Hilliard hate?
I guess my question would be... why a condo in Hilliard? What are you looking for in a location?
I find Hilliard to be fairly inconvenient in terms of location. It's kind of a "can't get there from here" quality.
The housing stock has always seemed quite reasonable in that area... there is lots of single family housing at prices comparable to condos, and I don't think you get any great benefit in terms of walkable amenities in buying into a condo. It might be worthwhile if you really wanted something like a pool or gym included as an amenity, but other than that, I can't see the real benefit of moving into a condo there.
Personally I think there is a bigger market for people looking for single family homes in that area... and with such a competitive market for condos, and lots of stuff coming online in the metro downtown area, I think demand is going to be relatively low.
My best friend actually just bought a condo in Hilliard (Might be considered Dublin...it's near the border I think). I have been pretty impressed with how nice it is, even if it is kind of hard to get there in any direct way from OSU. They are currently building the next installment of them and he was very impressed with how much condo he got for his money. I don't know if the ones that are already built and finished have sold out or not. I'm guessing not, but I don't know.
Next time I talk to him I can ask him what they are called/who sells them. They are next door to the Giant Eagle on Hayden Run Road.
Having worked and lived in the Hilliard area for 9 years, I might be able to help you out. I have a friend who just moved in to the Tremont Club and really likes it, corner of Davidson and Leap. Very easy to bike to downtown Hilliard and hit the rails to trails from there if you're into that sort of thing.
FYI, the Lifestyles Falls at Hayden Run, while they are probably nice, are in Columbus and Columbus City Schools. So if by Hilliard you mean Hilliard City Schools, be mindful of what you're getting into, as there are lots of boarder areas that might have a different mailing address than what the schools would be. Check out the Hilliard City School district web page or the County Auditor for maps. Dublin mail != Dublin Schools != Dublin City services
I was looking in Hilliard originally but got a nice place just blocks from old Dublin for not too much more money. It's got a 80 walkability score (walkscore.com)... which for a suburb is pretty good.
Plus, it's got Dublin Schools, Kroger is a 3 minute walk, and tons of new development moving into old Dublin. Also, there's Dublin Village Tavern, Brazenhead, J Liu's, Jeni's, La Chatellaine, Graeters, Max and Erma's, and so much more within a 10 minute walk radius.
Hope I didn't come across too braggy. I just love my area and would like to see some more young people move into it. The condos were built in the 70s and 80s, need a little love, and range from $120,000 to $160,000.
Thanks for all of your imput. We actually visited a work friend, who lives in a condo in Hillard. I became more interested. I know its behind a shopping center. But I currently live in Grandview, I'll be living right behind the new Grandview Yard. With it been worked on and built, its going to be noisy and busy. But that aside,I hope in a years time we will no longer be renters. These white walls, look like a mental hospital...
~Thanks again :3

Yep those terrible terrible Northwest side Columbus City schools, what with all their "Effective" and "Excellent" ratings from the state of Ohio.
