That's some really interesting thoughts Myliftkk, I never thought about splitting the role of reporter. In a way it already seems to be sort of happening. It's pretty routine to see reporters fishing for stories on twitter etc.

The NYTimes has a graphics dept. that's increasingly taking on some of the information load that reporters have shouldered in the past. Take a look at Kevin Quealy's description of how he and others put together a graphic to illustrate just how outstanding Mariano Rivera was as a closer.
