On Sunday, April 10, join us for Columbus Trivia Night from 7-9pm. The Jury Room, North Market Spices and the Columbus Historical Society are joining forces for a fun night of Columbus trivia in Columbus' oldest bar to benefit the Columbus Historical Society.

Enjoy cocktails and dishes featuring North Market Spices created by Executive Chef Eddie Shepard. 10% of the evening's sales and $1 from each cocktail purchased will benefit CHS. The evening will kick off at 7:00 PM and will end around 9:00 PM.

What a creative idea! It should be a fun evening.

I hope that I'm not starting an argument but I thought that the Ringside Cafe was Columbus' oldest bar.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

This got me thinking--what was the first bar to open in Columbus? According to William Alexander Taylor in Centennial history of Columbus and Franklin County, Ohio, Volume 1:

The first tavern was kept by Volney Payne in a two-story brick on the lot afterward occupied by the Johnston building. [Jacob Henry Studer in Columbus, Ohio: Its History, Resources, and Progress gives the date as Spring 1813, and mentions that the building was built for the purpose of having a tavern--but I can't figure out what the bar was called, or even where the "Johnston Building" was located, other than that it was somewhere on High.]

Volney Payne [et. al.] conducted this house until 1844.

[...]

Later, in 1815, David S. Broderick opened the "Columbus Inn" in a large frame building on the corner of Town and High. [...] Mr. Broderick having retired from the hotel business in 1818, [James B.] Gardiner took charge of the stand [...] and called it "The Rose Tree," with the Biblical quotation: "The wilderness shall blossom as the rose."

About 1816-16 there was a somewhat famous "place" yelept "The War Office," where, between drinking and carousing and quarreling and fighting, Squire Shields, who was among the first justices of the peace, was enabled to run a pretty heavy police docket at times.

Update: The Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society in The Ohio archaeological and historical quarterly, Volume 9 gives the name of the first bar in Columbus as "The Lion and The Eagle," although it changed its name after only four years of operation to "The Globe" [or possibly "The Globe Inn" depending on who you ask], a name which it apparently kept until ~1855 when the building was torn down to build the Johnston Building... which I still can't figure out where it was.

Update 2: This bar seems to have been the first two-story structure in town, and is also where a traveling circus exhibited the first giraffe to be seen in Columbus.

oh man... where I typed "yelept," that should actually be "yclept" which apparently is a Middle English word that just means "named/called." Stupid 19th century scholars...

Thanks to everyone who joined us last night! And big congrats to Bethia Woolf and her winning team!

It was so much fun we've already scheduled another one on Sunday, July 17.

Doug Motz, Jeff LaFever and the whole Columbus Historical Society team are an awesome group, we're lucky to have them here keeping Columbus history and pride alive and well.
