The momentum of the group in Columbus has been in one word amazing.
The group of people working behind the scenes to make a Columbus weekend happen has been a great one. In just a mere matter of days we’ve went from just talking about making the weekend happen to having a location selected, some ideas already coming in, and a large number of people saying they want to attend.
I’m proud to announce today Startup Weekend Columbus will be taking place July 18-20th at the amazing Tech Columbus facility.
The level of enthusiasm in Columbus and the surrounding area has been overwhelming and the bloggers of the area have been talking about the real possibility of Columbus Startup Weekend for the past several weeks. People in the area even coordinated an effort to get votes out for the city and it worked.
I’ve never seen a city rise so fast in a mere matter of hours and the emails begin coming in about what it will take to get the city a Startup Weekend like this before.
The obvious drive and talent of those in the area means that this weekend will most certainly be a successful one.

I am one of the individuals at the forefront of organizing and planning this event. Feel free to contact me for additional information about being involved in Startup Weekend Columbus.
As you can read in the blog post, we have shown the most enthusiasm BY FAR when it comes to the cities that have been chosen for this event. Columbus has the potential to host the most successful Startup Weekend yet as well as receive some serious national attention.
Past Startup Weekends have been extremely successful at producing excellent startup companies as well as bringing the community together.
Tech Columbus will be hosting this event in their space.
We are currently seeking sponsors -- both small and large. Sponsors of $500 or more will be given time during the weekend to address the group as a whole. Examples of sponsorship also include hosting a meal for the group (catering lunch). We would like to tap into as many of the community resources as possible (buy all supplies and provisions from local establishments!)
We are also looking for local bands and DJs who would be interested in contributing to the entertainment aspect.

Thanks for posting Walker. Any chance of promoting this on the main page? :D

This is pretty freakin amazing if you ask me. Way to go you u 2.
This is EXACTLY the kind of thing Columbus needs a lot more of. If we can foster a startup like culture here a lot of our development and density issues will take care of themselves. Nothing brings in YPs (or whatever you want to call them) like fun exciting jobs.. It's been proven time and time again across the country and is a core value that our country was created on.
Wyliemac and Hazystars your efforts make me proud of our city. :D

I wanted to revamp this post.
Registration has been really great thus far. We still have several spots available in each of the different categories (some more than others). Since there is a limited capacity on this event, I wanted to give the people on Columbus Underground the opportunity to secure spots before registration starts getting promoted to some of the larger tech organizations and companies around Columbus.
Check out the: COLUMBUS STARTUP WEEKEND BLOG for additional information.
Essentially, Startup Weekend is a three day community event where people pitch ideas for new businesses to members of the community. Each participating member chooses the idea they wish to help initiate and form breakout groups. Each break out group has the duration of the weekend to create the business plan for the idea.
There will be several resources available to all participants. Lawyers will be on hand to answer any legal questions (if you are a lawyer and would like to participate please PM me). Angel Investors will be involved as well. There will be speakers throughout the weekend, giving participants advice on how to turn an idea into a startup and a startup into a successful business. Angel Investors will be speaking about the "Art of The Pitch" and there is the possibility of financial advice as well.
We are still accepting sponsors and/or donations. Startup Weekend is a non-profit event. Registration fees and sponsorships will only be covering the costs of events. We need enough money to cover the costs of the venue, all of the meals and adult beverages, and t-shirts for the participants.
Other ways to participate???? STARTUP WEEKEND IS LOOKING FOR LOCAL BANDS AND MUSICIANS TO PROVIDE ENTERTAINMENT ON THE EVENING OF SATURDAY JULY 19TH. Anyone interested please contact me via PM.
Since we are trying to provide every meal to all participants, donations from local restaurants would be extremely welcome. We are interested in anyone from local coffee roasters/ shops - to restaurants - to beer and wine distributors - to markets and grocery stores ... etc.
Any questions? Check out our blog and feel free to PM me or Wyliemac!!!

Also, there will be a few "primer events" before Startup Weekend. We are planning on at least 2 social mixers (to allow everyone to meet and exchange ideas prior to the event) as well as TechColumbus will be hosting a seminar or two on startup companies.

ANNOUNCING THE FIRST STARTUP DRINKS
Check out the blog for Startup weekend by clicking on the link above. Here is the official announcement:
Startup Drinks @ Surly Girl Saloon on Wed. June 25
Many of you may know that Startup Weekend founder Andrew Hyde also started a little venture called Startup Drinks. The concept of Startup Drinks is simple: startup culture in cities around the world gathers around a bar to have a pint and discuss what they are working on, what they need help with and what they can do for each other. And we have a Startup Drinks chapter in Columbus!
I received word late last night that the organizer of Startup Drinks Columbus has organized the first event, with the help of our own Columbus Beer Wench, to be held on Wednesday, June 25 at the Surly Girl Saloon. Drinks will start at 6 PM, and the first round of appetizers will be provided by Jones Insight. While the event is free, please RSVP so as to give the organizer an idea of how many people will attend.
This should be a great opportunity for those attending or thinking about attending Startup Weekend Columbus an opportunity to meet.

I'm excited for Startup Weekend and will be participating. Startup Drinks sounds awesome. I'll definitely be there.
Can someone clear something up for me. I've heard multiple times that the holding company over Startup Weekend retains a 50% stake in any business created there. I can't seem to find any details on the site. 50% seems outrageous for access to a "platform".
If that's the case, my biggest concern is that idea folks, developers and entrepreneurs won't be bringing their A Game to the event because the terms don't favor entrepreneurs at all. Handing over 50% would be inconsistent with what similar folks like Y-Combinator and TechStars do who actually provide early stage, micro capital.
I'm guessing I have bad information, but let me know. Thanks.

Jon, I'm one of the organizers of the Columbus event. No, Startup Weekend, LLC does not take any stake in the companies formed out of Startup Weekend Columbus. They used to take a 5% interest, but now just leave it up to the individual teams on how they want to split equity. I'm looking forward to meeting you and please feel free to contact me with any other questions. wyliemac at gmail dot com.

DRINKS NEXT WEEK!!!
Hello. Have you heard of Columbus Startup Drinks? The concept is simple - people interested in startups casually get together for a drink and discuss what they are working on, what they need help with and what they can do for each other. By "startup", we don't mean just tech related. It could be a non-profit, a photographer, a web service... you get the picture.
Anyhow, the first Columbus StartUp Drinks is 6/25 at The Surly Girl Salloon starting at 6:00. Get there early for happy hour specials and the first round of appetizers will be provided by Jones Insight. Plus, there will be info regarding Columbus Startup Weekend coming July 18th (columbus.startupweekend.com).
While the event is free, please RSVP so we have an idea of how many people will attend. Just go to columbusstartup.eventsbot.com and click the "Buy now" button in the lower left - you will not be charged as admission is free.
Please pass this to your friends and peers who may be interested. Hope to see you on the 25th. - Brian
