One of the things I've always liked about living in Columbus is the proximity we have to other major cities in every direction. Many people cite our lack of a coastline as a disadvantage, but when you have a full 360 degrees of mobility there comes a better "Road Trip" amenity for those who chose to live here.
We're not that far from Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Indianapolis, Windsor, Toledo, Dayton, Charleston, Akron, Canton, and countless other cities and destinations.
Anyway, the Alive has a nice little write-up this week on a handful of Road-Trip destinations. Check em out:

I know I already made a little remark in the West Elm post about it, but Pittsburgh has some amazing shopping. Urban Outfitters and H&M did not need a plug there.
As I was reading all of those, I was thinking about those cities versions of Columbus Underground, and then I was thinking of Pittsburgh's versions of me reading about local favorites H&M and Urban Outfitters.

That was a neat guide. Within the state we also have some quality natural beauty (most of it is in SE and NE Ohio) great small towns and college towns that I'm sure rival any other states, the largest Amish country in the world, and even islands. Yes, islands in Ohio and they have lighthouses. I also recommend the other Cs for their Downtowns and great urban neighborhoods.

i didn't like the pittsburgh one. they didn't mention some of my favorite places, like mt. washington or station square.
mr. smalls isn't even in pittsburgh its in millvale and its a crappy venue, although the old church feel is cool. the Rex or club cafe is where you should go, they are both on carson street.

The Detroit review was B-R-U-T-A-L. As a native, reading that was the equivalent of reading a review of NYC that only talks about northern New Jersey. Just pitiful, an absolute abomination.
I'm not sure I have the time or energy right now to write a 2000-word evisceration to a 500-world column, but it's under consideration. Can any folks more familiar with the other cities reviewed comment on the accuracy to those?

I think Royal Oak is a good shopping area. Again though, it's the best clean, somewhat touristy shopping area. There are other places I would rather spend my money in detroit. I would have also mentioned detroit's casinos, if you're going to recommend gambling.
I would have liked Revival in Akron to get a plug, as it's a good shop, and the cities only boutique.
I will say, I think we all know these cities pretty well, so we're responding as somewhat locals. You know how every time a travel piece gets written on Columbus, we freak out about what wasn't mentioned?

There is a series of books of Ohio Road trips. IIRC, they are Cleveland-based, but cover all of Ohio. I only have the food one. Interesting stuff not only for destinations, but in-between like the mysteriously moving ball in Mansfield.

The Detroit entry is just plain strange (lived there, not from there): the Henry Ford and Windsor??? No museums, no Art Institute; not even a mention of the Fox Theater/Tiger Stadium district. All of that seem too much like the usual suspects? If I were steering someone toward places to eat, I'd pick among the Middle Eastern places -- a better reason to go to Dearborn. Or I might head to Ferndale.
Strangely too, the Pgh description sends people toward the Pgh version of Easton (South Side Works). Fun! No Shadyside (perhaps the future of the Short North, although I hope not). For the South Side, the dreariest places get a mention.

That's exactly what I wanted to say! Carson St. is Easton. Maybe a more authentic version, since it's actually in the city. And I am not an Easton Hater. But Pittsburgh has like four neighborhoods that are similar to the Short North, and other Pockets throughout and East Carson St. was picked! I just don't get it.

I'm brainstorming this morning about doing some CU road trip pieces. Would people be more interested in what CU reviewers have to say about the shopping/dining/entertainment in our neighboring cities?

I think we would be a little more in depth. I usually love the Alive, but I got the feeling that the writers just did a google search, and didn't actually go to these places. Maybe in some instances haven't actually been.

Yeah, and if you had CU readers do it we could also hit the spots beyond the obvious large cities. That'd be a real benefit. I could probably do ok getting myself to Pittsburgh, for example, and finding a weekend of things to do but there are probably a lot of small town or event/attraction specific places to check out within driving distance we wouldn't all know about.

I think it is a good idea. I've cut way back on the travel in the last couple of years, but Elena is constantly around in Ohio and surrounds.
A suggestion though : If it is part of the forum, spin off its own section and maybe moderate it to keep it focused. For example, threads like Zach's trip to the 'burg generate off-course chatter. That can make a Pittsburgh-oriented thread hard to use.
How about an inside Columbus road trip bloggie-thread? Like a running catalogue of new and neat things we all discover in our own city that are outside the norm of shops or restaurants.

I think that's a great idea, Andrew. Even further, I would like to hear more focused perspectives on the same city from different people. Andrew or Bear on food, Chris or I on shopping, Zach on biking/what they are doing to save the planet....

Okay. Tomorrow evening I'm heading out to Charleston on a rather spontaneous road trip. Although I have been through South Carolina, I've never been to Charleston. Mapquest says it is a straight shoot south.
Questions for all you CUers. Does anyone have any experience making this trip? Any suggestions on how to get down there? Approximately how long did i take? Are there any super cool nitchy local places down there I should check out? Pretty much the plan is to hit the beach hardcore, however, weather.com predicts scattered T-storms on Saturday and Sunday. I'd love to have some back up options.
