Columbus residents to test rain barrels

Clintonville residents will be some of the first to try out a new rain barrel from Greif Inc.
The Delaware-based company, which makes industrial and commercial containers, is donating 250 of the barrels to the city of Columbus. It's part of a test for the product that will soon be available in stores.

Gah - I want to test!
I actually found the rainbarrel I want finally --- it solves the overflow issue easily, simple construction, doesn't look quite as terrible as some, and seems to be decently priced....

so, does one of these barrels go at each downspout, or is a reconfiguration in order?

It doesn't take much roof area to fill one - 1 inch of rain on 1 sq foot = 0.6 gallons. IIRC the back roof that drains to my disconnected downspout is about 490 sq feet so that's 294 (clean and free) gallons from an inch of rain.

No reconfiguratoin is in order. You can place as many as you want. If you want to use the captured stormwater to water plants, it would be wise to place the barrel at the downspout close to that area.

Have you ever seen where they have multiple barrels lined up? I would like to see the design for how they are connected and how they work for my garden this year.
Also, has anyone found "cheap" rain barrels?

There are various designs that deal with overflow in various ways.
Skeeters are not a problem if you're using the water. You can dip a watering can and scoop up the larvae, then pour tham out on the garden.
That's another thing, an ordinary watering can can fill in about one second when dipped.

I'm sure I've described this in another thread before - on a Knox County property, I had three barrels connected by old garden hose as a siphon. The roof drainage fell into the first barrel, and the water would equalize levels between barrels (actually two of them were old plastic trash cans). The setup could hold ~150 gallons which was very handy for the gardens, as the cabin had no running water.

My uncle has 5 in a row. If I remember correctly, the first one is higher than the second and so on with just a small piece of hose going from the tops.
