Making The Boys, a Pride movie event with Stonewall
Thursday, June 2 at 7:00pm
Location: Gateway Film CenterMore Info
Reception at 7 pm, film at 8pm
Light Appetizers and Cash Bar with Drink Specials - Tickets $6
Benefiting Stonewall Columbus and the Columbus International Film+Video FestivalMAKING THE BOYS tells the story of Mart Crowley's groundbreaking play "The Boys in the Band" - from overnight sensation on Broadway, to Hollywood's first gay movie, to cultural landmark and worldwide phenomenon - all the while having a complicated and sometime...s controversial relationship with the gay community. No one could have guessed the impact that a small Off-Broadway production would have on the social climate of the 1960s... not to mention how important and monumental it was to gay people at the time, many of whom were still in the closet. MAKING THE BOYS features illuminating and entertaining footage from the period, interwoven with extensive interviews with Crowley, William Friedkin, the Oscar-winning director of the BOYS movie, and a host of luminaries inluding Dominick Dunne, Tony Kushner, Terrence McNally, Edward Albee, Dan Savage, Robert Wagner and many others.
CRITIC'S PICK! "Captivating and entertaining...sometimes you don't have to go very far into the past to be amazed at how drastically things have changed. 'Making the Boys' is fascinating recent history and a fascinating personal story as well."

No Matter which way you swing, the Pride Parade is one of the most entertaining events (not exactly kid-friendly, though) to see all summer long!

The wickedly funny mc's acerbically commenting on the players and each other makes for a fun afternoon. I don't think I've ever laughed harder than at one of these games.

Matt took some nice photos. He has some great telephoto images. I armed myself with my petite Canon S95, and snapped a few photos. Here's a Flickr link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/39706870@N08/sets/72157627001299832/
And a taste of some of my favorites:

PZ ... thanks for sharing, the Pride photo's in your flicker account were tremendous. I had an out of town visitor in town who does not like parades and large gatherings of people so we did not make it to the parade. Glad you shared the pics.

You and your visitor missed a great event. Next time maybe suggest viewing it from Hyatt Regency, Hampton Inn or even Barley's or Knead, if you think they would view from afar.
Hey! I've got pics to Bat-N-Rouge at Dodge Park, but need to load them tonight. I'll post here when they are downloaded. :]

In the not-so-unlikely situation of the US economy experiencing yet another, and perhaps worse, economic crisis, how might right wing populism affect the lives of queer folk ?
If there are more economic crises, a veer to the political left could lead to civil war and revolution. But a veer to the political right could lead to authoritarianism that involves making scapegoats of queer folk, along with undocumented immigrants.
Working class and working poor folk with whom I’ve spoken in Dayton and in other post-industrial wastelands tend to talk more about undocumented Mexican workers taking their jobs than they talk about corporate greed behind the push to send jobs overseas.
Unfortunately, with some charismatic authoritarianism, gays and lesbians could be added to that list of who to blame. Masses of people may tend to blame not those responsible for the crises, but instead those who are least capable of defending themselves.
Religious conservative veterans of the 1990s culture wars are perhaps a bit subdued these days, but fighting for ‘family values’ may still end up being a way to mobilize masses of people to blame our nation’s loss of greatness on queer folk, immigrants, and godless liberals in general.
Given the corporate control of our mass media, that message is likely to win out over a message that calls attention to the ongoing concentration of wealth undermining our national interest.
I often tell friends I’m a reformist, not a revolutionary. But if the latter is the only viable alternative to political repression, then I’m for revolution.
