You start to see this everywhere, and it becomes part of the city's identity. The Chicago city flag is certainly leveraged to this point, as arenn noted. I would argue that most native Chicagoans even know what the four stars symbolize.
I used to know this when I lived there. The two blue bars represent the two branches of the Chicago River. The stars, as I recall, have something to do with the World Fairs and other significant events from history.
But, to be fair, no one outside of Chicago gives a thought to their flag. And neither do most people in Chicago.

We're working out the details of the contest right now. It's pretty exciting to see the interest in the City's flag. I'll keep everyone posted!

Another good blog post on flags:
http://dirtamericana.blogspot.com/2009/11/judging-flag-by-its-wavelength.htmlAlso, for those who doubt the prominence of Chicago's flag, I took this picture at the parade celebrating the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup victory. It was not the only Chicago flag on display that day.
I also saw a cyclist wearing a Chicago flag T-shirt yesterday on the Lakefront Trail.

I was watching Home Alone last weekend (because, y'know, Christmas in July), and finally took notice of the Chicago city flag hanging prominently in Kevin's attic bedroom. Despite many viewings over the years, I never would've noticed that detail if not for this discussion thread.

Speaking to Walker's idea, why not remake the flag into some kind of an arch shape? Or, at the very least, incorporate an arch into the flag somehow?
