Columbus native and Denison University grad Molly O'Neill warmly reflects on the diverse food scene in her former home town in a segment on CBS' Sunday Morning show. Columbus is one of the many cities cited in her recently published story cookbook titled One Big Table that showcases different emigrant family cuisines spanning the the Nation. One Big Table is equally fitting a title for our local diverse food scene as it is for the rest of the Nation and the people that prepare it.

We had the pleasure of meeting Molly O'Neil on one of her follow up visits to Columbus. We spent a day showing her around some of the alt eats restaurants and taco trucks as part of some research she was doing.
Here's our account of the day.

That's great. I vividly remember reading her food column in the New York Times magazine a decade or two ago --she never missed a chance to deride the cuisine of her hometown and to express how glad she was to have escaped. I guess it shows how far we've come in that time.

The montage of restaurant signs on the CBS video reminded me of a couple CFA tours. Honestly, it's the first thing that came to mind. And when Molly was talking affectionately about all the emigrant restaurants in Columbus, she was speaking your language.

Heheh... there's a reason for that.
Molly contacted us just prior to pulling together that video spot. She had been searching for anything and everything related to immigrant kitchens in her hometown, and was tickled by the idea of ethnic food tours in little old Columbus.
So, long story short: we provided her with all of the images shown in the video, they're mostly from pictures taken during the alt.eats & taco truck tours. If you look at the part where it pans down over the Wonderbread sign, you can actually see the top of the CFA tour van.

Great stories all around, here. Sorry I missed this in your informative blog. I caught your post about Taqueria El Fogoncito and visited for Taco Tuesday. OMG! Delicious, and once again, in my backyard. Looks like there is a new Somalian restaurant and Chinese restaurant in the Little Mogadishu
corridor now, not far away from Taqueria El Fogoncito.
"I assumed that Columbus would stay the same. WRONG! The United Nations of Gastronomy is scattered through its suburbs today".
