We are a family of 3 have a 8 year old sonwho will be seen at Childrens Hospital Fri morning. We will be in Columbus for the weekend of Aug. 6th and plan on being at Schmidts when they open for lunch. What is the parking like in German Village? How close is the closes parking lot, etc.? then to COSI for the Titanic. We will go to the Zoo on Sat or Sun. will go to Ohio or Indian Caverns. What else is there you all would consider as "Must See or do " when In Columbus.

Schmidt's has a fairly sizeable parking lot next to it for its customers.
As for other things to do, I'm partial to this option.

Before or After Schmidt's, head over to The Book Loft nearby:
Definitely would recommend swinging by The North Market:
If you're looking for good restaurants, here's a great place to start:

Would also recommend the Franklin Park Conservatory:
Hope you have a great time in Columbus! :D

The newly erected Grange Insurance Audubon Center is a great diversion, and close to downtown.

Statehouse is always a good bet. Don't know what the current weekend staffing is like for guided tours, so give them a call and see when someone will be available. Building itself is pretty well open on the weekends, including the new museum. Big thing the (Free!) guided tour will get you on weekends is access to legislative chambers. Maybe a few other spaces depending on the guide.

I've lived in Columbus for over 40 years...tell me how the Indian Caverns are, because in all that time I still haven't actually made it! :D (not for lack of wanting to, btw, just haven't done it).
Plan on spending a fair amount of time at COSI and the zoo, there's really a LOT to do and see both places. When around downtown, a nice place to just relax is the topiary garden by the main library.

Thanks for the info everyone. What area is the safest, crime wise, to stay.
Posted 1 year ago # -
the area immediately around Children's is a little sketchy for an out of towner, but within a mile you're in places like German Village or downtown itself which are totally safe. Honestly, during daytime hours particularly, there's not much to worry about anywhere.

Check out the Hampton Inn High Street, adjacent to North Market and the fun Short North, two Jeni's Splendid ice cream shops within walking. Jeni's is mandatory.
I concur with those who recommend North Market, Topiary Park and Franklin Park Conservatory. Summer can be a fun time to drive (or walk of course, it's huge) the Ohio State University campus. Horseshoe, Mirror Lake, beautiful original buildings.

I can't think of a single brand-name hotel in the core of the city (near Children's Hospital) that I'd consider to be located in a shady/sketchy area with crime problems.

we think we will stay someplace north side maybe DublinThere's nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but it seems awfully far from a lot of the city's areas of interest. The Hampton Inn mentioned previously is really right in the middle of it all - adjacent to both the Arena District and the Short North (and close to Victorian Village), which by themselves would probably be good for a weekend's worth of exploration... and you could do it all on foot very easily. It's also not much more than a mile from German Village, where Schmidt's is.
Safety definitely isn't a concern in any of the areas around the Hampton Inn. I routinely walk them day and night and have never had any problems.

Downtown is the way to go if you are going to be making trips to Children's Hospital and Cosi. You'll be able to walk and explore so much more than you would staying in a Dublin hotel.

Depending on your price range there is also the Renaissance and the Residence Inn on Gay street, which is an easy walk to some good restaurants. The Hampton Inn and the Hilton might be a bit closer of a walk to the Short North however.
Dublin is closer to the Zoo, but there's not much more beyond that up there. I'd stay closer to downtown.
ETA: So what do you think your kids would like? Are they outdoorsy types? Do they like science? Are they adventurous? Are they going to be excited to stay in Columbus and walk around the city?
An idea might be to go someplace like Batelle-Darby park and hike around and picnic. Another would be to look and see if any interesting events (to you and your kids) are coming up. For example there are several car shows and free concerts through the summer as well as the state fair coming up soon.

if you want to say close to Downtown and Arena District then check out the Lofts http://www.55lofts.com/ They are the coolest hotel rooms I've stayed at in Columbus, but that was about 10 years ago. and the lofts are near the Flatiron, great for dinner.
Dublin sucks for traffic (270/Sawmill) and those are going to be some long trips to the Hospital. at least with a more central location you can access anywhere easily and be close to home base.
there are plenty of great hotles in/near downtown. check out the Renaissance, http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/cmhbr-renaissance-columbus-downtown-hotel/
it's located downtown on a great strip of restaurants and bars, and it has a pool on top of it. the Hyatt on capital square is located right across from the Statehouse. http://capitolsquare.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jspWhy settle for more suburbia when you can have something more interesting? I don't go to Dublin unless I have to. it's more driving that it's worth. But if I did have to stay up there I'd probably try to find something close to their Downtown.

If you're comfortable with it, try Priceline for downtown hotels. You can get some great deals ($50/night or so) for very nice hotels (Doubletree, Hyatt, etc.)

also FYI, Dublin is going to be packed the weekend of Aug 6th for the Dublin irish fest http://www.dublinirishfestival.org/
If you want away from the City, but still be close, check the Hilton at Easton. http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/CMHCHHF-Hilton-Columbus-at-Easton-Ohio/index.do

Hey everyone we really appreciate all the help. We just have the one appointment at Children's on Fri morning then the rest of the weekend is free. I think we are going to stay at the Ramada Columbus North as after COSI and eating at Schmidts and checking out the Book Loft Sat. and Sun. activities will be North. ( the Zoo,the Caverns,) Thanks for all the input.

Zoombeizie(sp?) Bay is the waterpark at the Columbus Zoo. It's alot of fun if you like water, you can spend a whole day there. Plenty to do with the kids and I had lots of fun on the slides as an adult too. You can get discount tickets at Kroger I think.

Of the two caverns, I'm mighty partial to OHIO Caverns. If you make it up there, West Liberty is about 1 mile away and has a really neat chocolate shop called Marie's. They make everything from scratch and ship all over the world. There's also a great ice cream shop in West Liberty, and you'll pass Piatt & Mac-O-Cheek Castles, which might be worth a stop if you're interested in old/historic houses.
