Being Italian isn't only for older folks.
So says Joe Contino, the 35-year-old chairman of the Columbus Italian Festival, who's working to inject a dash of youth in the 29th annual event.
During his first year as chairman, Contino has promoted the festival more aggressively through radio and the Internet, tweaked the musical mix to make it more hip and partnered with an organization of young professionals.
No one's counting gray hairs, but Contino's efforts appear to be paying off.
He said about 5,000 people attended Friday, the kickoff day, about triple last year's number. Many were first-time attendees, including younger people who'd heard about the event on WWCD (101.1 FM), an alternative-rock station.

I volunteered at the Italian Village Society booth today. I saw a pretty much 45+ crowd. Lots of polo shirts and women with dyed hair. I had a lot of seniors buying shirts "for their grandson/duaghter" at the booth I was sitting in.Helped sell 18 shirts that said Italian Village Columbus on them!
It was a good time though, and the festival does offer something different like Bocce and good dancing music, plus the pizza was fantastic!
One of the oddest parts was when a 20 something year old man with a McCain button pinned to a South Carolina shirt pretty much about stopped an inch short of admitting that he was a Nazi. Speaking of Genocide and murder, I did not care for all the Christopher Columbus patronage at the event.
I tried to enter the canolli eating competition, but they said you had to apply and be picked first! That was a bummer as I was really hunger and spent all money money on a pizza slice with Chewla. The water at the drinking fountain was really good though!
I must also applaud the Italian Festival for being the only fest in town I know of that sells liquor and wine! How they do that?

I'd imagine the Sunday crowd is much different than the Fri/Sat night crowds. I drove by on Friday night and saw loads of what appeared to be College-age and/or High-School age kids walking up and down fourth near the fest.

Also, I'm pretty sure the Wine Festival sells wine. ;)

We went on Friday and it was sooooooo fun. I am not big on sweets, but appreciate home made cannoli, tira misu and casata cake---WOW.
I loved the mix of people. The Ducati station, the accordion players and ultra strong espresso!!! :D

That's true. I remember that Saturday night the last two years were much younger.

The lady that sold Sambucco down by the main tent gets a thumbs up from me. She had the essential coffee beans. The other tent went on the cheap concerning that.
Was a fun fest. Is this the last major fest in town for the season?

Italians have contributed great deal to American society, especially in the arts and in labor history, as well as their great improvements on the American culinary front. It is unfortunate, however that in Columbus, Ohio and even at the Italian festival only a trivialized and distorted view of Italian-American influence is offered. We have a street named after Marconi who is (falsely) credited with having invented the radio. In fact Marconi infringed on an existing patent and only improved the design of the first radio. He was also a supporter of Naziism - not an admirable character at all.
Columbus ("Christopher") was an inept maritime navigator and a slave trader with a particularly cruel streak and a penchant for abject barbarism and brutality - not just toward the Native Americans who he tortured, raped and murdered as a matter of policy, but even toward his own crews. Although originally from Genoa, Columbus' "discoveries" were all made in the service of Spain. How anyone can claim him as an Italian "hero" is beyond me.
What about the Italian miners who fought so bravely against the corrupt coal companies in this region? What about Sacco and Vanzetti? What about Mario Lanza, or Meucci, the real inventor of the telephone telephone? If you want to include Italians who did not live in America there are plenty of greats to choose from - great inventors, artists, and humanitarians, etc. Why celebrate the worst in Columbus while ignoring so may others?

I think evandavis is correct, but festivals in general aren't widely known for their calm, rational view of history. They're just parties. So while his sentiments may be right, it's probably useless to try to convince a group of buzzed revelers that "being in Columbus, when Christopher Columbus was Italian!" isn't just the coolest reason to drink more wine.
