Really? That's the kind of thing I would have thougt I'd've heard about. I've heard plently about NYC's bedbug problem, but not a word about them in Columbus.
Am I just out of the bedbug loop?
since it's based partly on sales of the pesticide used to kill them, maybe we just care more about fixing it than being media whores?
That article reads like a commercial to me. The link they provide for the task force is also incorrect. Bedbugs are a problem in Columbus, mostly in apartments. However there have also been several infestations at OSU dorms. Info about bedbugs in Central Ohio can be found at http://centralohiobedbugs.org/
I am not surprised we're high on the list, but I had read nyc and dc and sf had infestations as well.
And much larger ones.
Hotels are hotbeds for bedbugs. We get lots of travel for conventions and sports.
Phasing out of the old chem used to kill em means bedbugs are back and this time it's personal.
Could be the popularity of all the Abercrombie & Fitch clothing here:

Someone in the apartment building next door to me had them. All their furniture was out by the dumpsters with BEDBUGS spray-painted on it in huge red letters. Ick. I have known several flight attendants who have gotten bitten at hotels and live in fear of inadvertently bringing them home with me. Double ick.
I've heard from several landlords on the east and southeast side that bedbugs are a problem. Expensive to fix, too.
Galloway/west side has the problem as well. I know the thrifts are really tightening down on what they'll resell, and how they manage it. Blurgh.
Tourist19 - I think if I had to sleep in a lot of strange beds (that sounds more titillating than reality, eh?), I'd get a sleep sack/dream sack.

Yeah, I know some co-workers who have those. Me, I just do the room check:
1) Look for black spots on bed frames and in between mattresses and the bed and wall.
2) NEVER leave your suitcase sitting on the floor. That's how they come home with you. If there isn't a suitcase holder thingy it goes on the desk.
I am currently in a very nice, clean strange bed (does indeed sound way more titillating than reality) in Huston, but of course even though I had already done the check on entering the room had to do it again once I saw this thread.
Jes. This thread activates my OCD.
The thought of bedbugs is heebee-jeebee-fying. Ew.
I always thought Cincinnati was by far the worst place for bedbugs in Ohio. Never thought Columbus was even close.
On the flip side, however, Cleveland has also been dealing with them lately. Regional outbreak?
WE'RE NUMBER ONE! WE'RE NUMBER...
oh... crap... nevermind
Had an 'investigative report' done on the places that resell used mattresses in Philly. They look nice and clean in the plastic, but a lot of them had bedbugs.
(ok, I'm scratching myself uncontrollably now)

It's a national outbreak. From what I understand, they're found most commonly in apartment buildings rather than hotels, because the hotels have a pretty stringent policy about getting rid of them right away. The high rates in Columbus might have more to do with better reporting and more attention to bed bug problems in Central Ohio.
Why did I open this again? I have got to stop doing this to myself!
