Meet Your Maker: Allison Meade

What do you make/do?

I’m a welder, primarily. I build furniture and sculpture out of scrap metal and vintage auto parts. I also paint, write, do photography and various other things. There’s not much I haven’t tried, though I find the most enjoyment out of welding and building things out of metal. I also love to teach welding. The new women’s welding classes at the CIF has been so much fun… I look forward to teaching more people and sharing my passion.

Help!! I'm considering this welding class and have been trying to find out the timeframe. (It will make a difference for me). So far I've emailed a message from the registration page and tried calling the Foundry phone number. I have yet to get an email responce, and the calling just produces a voice message saying to email any questions.

Would anyone on here happen to know the time for the class, or have a direct contact at the foundry?

Thanks for any help.

Alex - do you have a better email or phone number?? Like mripley, I have run into the same problem on two separate occasions with Columbus Idea Foundry and given up on registering.........Thanks.

Was reminded--again--at Third Hand the other day that I know little about fixing and making things, even the relatively simple bicycle, which neither I nor some of my friends knew how to properly weld. But plan to learn more practical things.

This calls to mind 3 of the 4-H components: head, heart, and hands. That is, meaningful engagement involves our intellects, our social ties, and practical know-how.

Try to keep my posts public and not pm'd. I'll spread the word about CIF. Presently, I'm having a pedicab frame built by some folk in Mexico who have a good track record. Will prob go with them instead of Blackwood Sheet Metal located behind Haiku. But got to check out your facilities one way or another, sooner or later. Got to make it out to Eartha Limited too. Mad about composting.

Actually, OK. Got to talk to some folk at Third Hand who can coordinate this. Might make it there Weds. Won't be able Sat. Sorry to repeat myself, rocking back and forth among the cobwebs, and slow chaos of specks of dust in the shaft of sunlight near the cracked pane of the basement window.

@ alexbandar: Opting to bump CIF, instead of PMing you. As it turns out, might utilize your place to weld mounts to, and lengthen, a pedicab frame. Your fee is likely less than what Blackwood Sheet Metal would charge. Plus, hands-on learning is good. Can't just live off of the fumes of abstractions.

Steve Meyer who owns Mainstreet Pedicabs in Denver likely won't have the frame until about 2 months or more. Another pedicabbie, Matt Soha, the guy pedaling the Short North with music and who's most of the brains behind what I'm building, might be interested in CIF for other projects.

Thanks, Tom! Note that we also have experience at making food trucks and food carts - pedicabs aren't a big stretch from that. When you're ready to do some work, please do feel free to contact me about a tour, project scope, fees, etc. Cheers!
