The Columbus Idea Foundry will most likely be expanding in late summer 2011, and is seeking artists, entrepreneurs, businesses, communities and individuals interested in renting space with us. We will be expanding into the neighboring 10,000 square foot industrial unit, which is contiguously connected with our current workshop and studio spaces. Please email "columbus.idea.foundry at gmail.com" for more details. Tenants who rent with us not only will have their own studio space, but will have convenient access to our tools (woodworking, welding, metal casting, CNC machining, laser cutting, 3D printing, blacksmithing, power tools, electronics & programming, and much more), and will become a part of our talented and personable community of engineers, artists, designers, tinkerers, web programmers, business developers, and more. This is a great opportunity to start a business, invent a prototype, manufacture a product line, or simply join our dynamic and creative group.

Help Double the Size of the Columbus Idea Foundry

The operators of the Foundry just launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $5,500 to double the size of their space and provide opportunities for a photographic dark room, a videography stage, a textile/ upholstery station, a lithography room for etching/engraving circuits, and around a dozen individual studio rental spaces.

The DIY philosophy behind the Idea Foundry reminds me of what some people concerned about peak oil and other aspects of 'energy descent' are doing.

Whether they're more hipster than hippie or neither, they're placing an emphasis on learning practical skills. Some 'doomers' also are doing that.

Or did I jump to conclusions during my quick glance of the website ?

Columbus Underground Aims to Raise $2000 for Columbus Idea Foundry

We reported a few weeks ago that the Columbus Idea Foundry had launched a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter.com to raise $5,500 so that they could double the size of their space. This unique creative resource provides collaborative workspace for inventors, artists and micro-manufacturers.

There’s still two weeks to go on their fundraising efforts and Columbus Underground is stepping up to the plate to help fill the gap. We’re pledging a matching donation of up to $1000 for every Columbus Underground contributor who donates to their cause. You pitch in $10, we’ll pitch in $10. You pitch in $20, we’ll pitch in $20. If you can collectively raise $1000, we’ll double it with $1000 of our own.

Columbus Idea Foundry Attracts Builders; Artists

Occupying 20-thousand square feet at the end of Corrugated Way off Fifth Avenue, the Columbus Idea Foundry is home to some 35 engineers, fabricators, artists and do-it-yourselfers. After a move to its present location, one expansion and another planned, perhaps no one is more surprised by its success than its founder.

Three years ago metallurgist Alex Bandar started a workshop and design center for like-minded people who wanted to design and build things, people who loved to tinker with new ideas but perhaps lacked the proper tools. Bandar says he spent two years “yelling into the wind” appealing to wood workers before realizing they probably owned all the tools they needed to ply their craft.

ReFab Studio helps businesses make their design ideas reality

Essentially ReFab Studio is a business whose mission is helping other businesses. Founded by Dylan Paul and Levi Crumley in 2010, ReFab does a little bit of everything, from tool design and fabrication to creating custom storefront fixtures. “We sort of specialize in the napkin sketch,” Paul says. “People will bring us their ideas and we help take them to the next step.”

In this day and age, if you can think it, you can make it. That’s the guiding principle at Columbus Idea Foundry. “Communication or information isn’t the bottleneck,” said Alex Bandar, who founded the Foundry. “Really, the bottleneck in implementing your ideas is access to tools and the know-how to use them. That’s what we do here.”
