With the completion of the Crew Stadium Stage, we're looking forward to hosting various events on game days. The first of these will be our popular Ultimate Tailgate Party.
We are moving this celebration from the Stadium Club to the stage for our Memorial Day Weekend clash with the New England Revolution. The Crew are looking to win their 5th straight home game and we want the stadium rocking when they take the field.
This should be an awesome opportunity to see the new stage, see the field from a new perspective and get fired up for the game!

Indeed. If anyone hasn't been in a while, or has ever wanted to check out the Crew and/or Major League Soccer, go to a game and bring some friends. The atmosphere is terrific, the quality of play is better than ever, and the boys in Black & Gold are top of the table!
There are rumors all over soccer boards that Columbus' franchise will get moved someplace like St. Louis or Montreal, partly due to attendance issues. While these rumors exaggerate the problem (Columbus has consistently been in top half of attendance averages, despite being the smallest market in MLS), attendance has slipped the past few years. Of course the excuse was poor play, and the Crew have missed the playoffs the past 3 years. That's no longer an issue - the team has gotten healthy, bought into Schmid's system and coalesced around stars like Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Alejandro Moreno. I'm afraid of what our fan support will look like if we continue to win and they start showing games on ESPN with half-empty stands. I hope we can grow new support for the team so the crowd can rock Crew Stadium once again! :roll:

From what I understand, much of the the sports media in Columbus really dislikes soccer and the Crew, and really just wants them to go away (a la Jim Rome). They prefer to talk about the Buckeyes 24/365.
I think they might be elated if we lost the Crew.

Yeah? Well screw those guys. As somone who never cared for American Football in the first place (and let's not even discuss the Buckeyes), I have to say it's nice to have something I can enjoy March through November. Having the Crew here definately makes my weekends in Columbus more fun.
On the other hand, I'm in Houston this week and they have it way worse. Soccer is seen as a "Latino thing" and gets dumped on a lot by the local gentry. They already lost a bid to put in a downtown stadium next to the Toyota Center and things are looking grim for some of the other stadium deals in the works.
At the end of it, I really don't think the Crew is going anywhere for quite some time. They're about ready to announce a new training center (looking like Hilliard) and I think there's a few teams lined up to move ahead of us. (KC anyone?)

At this point, I'm for expansion but not moves. If Houston moves again, it would be a crock. They just left San Jose and now the owner is extorting the city of Houston for stadium money or he walks. WTF!?
MLS has come a long way and can be profitable sooner rather than later. The league just needs to be a little more patient.
I agree about the local media. I've worked with several of these sportscasters (not naming names) and have no respect for the OSU jocksniffers.

Well, I think the stadium deal was in the works when they moved the team and it turned into a political football and canned.. I might be wrong, but I can't imagine uprooting a team without at least a promise of a stadium.
As for expansion, we're already getting Philly and Seattle teams in the next few years. I know that there is a lot of clamor for a mls team in Saint Louis and Portland (among others). I just don't see the league expanding that quick. And let's be honest.. KC is just twisting in the wind right now..

I think it's well on the way.. Incremental expansion has served them pretty well. Addition of the Designated Player spots should help add some needed spice to gameplay.

Yeah, well I don't really watch tv or listen to the radio, but I know that Shawn Mitchell over at the Dispatch is doing a great job. (Check out his blog here)

I am as big a soccer nerd as they come.
For the MLS to succeed they need to not be looked at as the retirement league for the good leagues :P Should just allow more foreign players on each team.
It has done a lot to help the National Team (which is basically why its there). But US soccer has been ranked a bit high the last five years IMO.
I'd much rather see the US National Team members playing in England, Spain, Italy, or Germany...where the competition level is at a whole different level.
Plus I hate the style that the American teams play. Go watch a European game...its much nicer to watch. The difference is even greater if you go watch an American College soccer game....even the top ranked teams. Its just sloppy, very sloppy. I'd go into more detail but this post is long already lol

Do you mean that American soccer (MLS) is more physical that European soccer?

I feel that MLS lacks the "Style" that European soccer does.
It is very calculated feeling and lacks the anticipation, excitement, and all out belligerent play that makes watching a match so awesome for the European teams.
Even in the World Cup games, you can tell the obvious difference in style of play.

It's like watching a lower minor league level of a professional sport. I will say that the level of play of MLS has improved, slowly. The league is headed in the right direction but has a long way to go to compete with even the mediocre teams of the European or South American leagues.
I'm still learning the game and will probably be abandoning the NFL when the Bills head to Toronto in a couple of years. MLS and the EPL will be a fine replacement.

I haven't watched enough European soccer to be able to tell the difference. I do notice that we seem to play a little tighter on the ball than they do. They always seem to be more spread out with more precision passing. Also, our one-on-one challenges seem to be a little harder than theirs.
Overall though, I am really hooked on watching MLS. I enjoy it more than American football because of the continuous play, much simpler rules and much shorter games. I don't like devoting 3-4 hours of my day to single football game. Way too long.

I guess you could say that.. but it's becoming less and less true as we had more South American, African and European pros.
Then again it could also be said we lack the match fixing and hooliganism of European soccer too.

I've only been to one match so far, but have seen all the rest on TV, and will testify that this is not the same team we've had for years. Guille has them playing with some South American flair. Crisp passing, long runs and devastating counters. Some of this is toned down by Sigi's conservative gameplans on the road (ie. TFC on 5/17), and a few recent injuries. The result is league dominance. Massive!!! I will have to record this weekend's game, as they don't get FSC where I'll be camping. :lol: We need a win vs. the Revs - it will be a true 6-point game.

Ditto that. It was painful to watch in '06. Landon choked and why the hell was Cunningham left off the roster? Putting in Johnson in the final minutes was the only time Arena even attempted to inject offense. Pathetic! :evil:

I think that more than a few fans wouldn't mind giving TFC coach John Carver a smack upside the head, but the fans are generally ok.. They seem to lose pretty gracefully :-)

I don't know.. when teams have to play to empty stands because of the supporters groups and you have 200-300 person brawls before, during and after matches, I think it's gone too far.

I've been to Crew games. I've watched and attended European matches.
Some of the differences were touched on but I'll elaborate to help those that are new to watching the Beautiful Game.
Someone mentioned that USA soccer has people more closely guarding etc. This is true and is from how we are all brought up playing soccer around here. Hustle hustle hustle...get to the ball, close down...etc. Except that you dont need to do that 90% of the time. Save your energy, close down when you see an opportunity. Just cause you can run 20 miles and not be tired...doesnt mean you should be doing that all game.
US soccer seems forced. They force the ball up the field. Europeans are methodical. Brilliant passing, even from the mediocre teams, switching the ball to the other side. Their game just flows better. You can see the method to what they are trying to execute. US games are like flies running all over forcing the ball down the field...its ugly.
There is a problem in the US and its the main reason why Soccer still has room to grow. The US has thousands of amazing professional athletes, but they are spread over sooo many sports. MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, etc etc. What do they have in Europe? Its like Soccer/Rugby/Cricket....race cars, etc.
There is simply more money in the other sports in the US. If the MLS's salaries could rival the other sports, maybe kids would be more persuaded to play soccer. It's sad but true, pure chicken or the egg kinda thing. Some kid wants to pursue some sport in high school and hes extremely gifted and is being recruited by NBA, NFL and MLS...guess where hes going...
I've just watched so much European soccer that if I try and watch an MLS game on TV is just painful. Almost as painful as watching Women's soccer (which is like watching men play in sand...sorry its true...watch a game, or ref a game...). I'll go to an MLS game all the time, just cant watch them on TV. Even European announcers are better LOL.

Lotsa people here in the US don't like soccer b/c we weren't brought up on it. It's not seen as being "cool" (like basketball), or "action-packed" (like football), or a tradition (Baseball). I'm not the biggest soccer fan, but I like it ok, and will probably go to more mateches as my kids get older.
For sheer excitement and utter confusion, though, I go watch those dudes who play Cricket on Kenny & Lane :wink:

I agree, the culture of soccer is coming around though. The MLS is helping our National team.
What I want to see is the MLS expand. Not into Canada and Mexico...that defeats the point.
What I want to see are MLS run developmental leagues like they do in Europe. I want to see the Crew have teams from age 8 all the way up though High School. This is brilliantly done in Europe. MLS needs a feeder system, and a way to reach kids younger.
Using American Colleges as a feeder system isnt the best way IMO. All these college coaches with their ideas on coaching...etc. Let's get them into the MLS system early, learn how to play and make the National Team better.
The US could also stand to develop their coaches and referees a bit also.
