Looks like it was written in 2006 so I'm sure those plans for the towers have been shelved. Would be nice though to see what they were planning. I am itching for a new tower or two to go up. It doesn't happen often in this city.

I know it was a 2006 / 2007 document, but I don't remember either project mentioned during that time. I would love to see a new tower or two go up as well. If Cincy can blow their downtown vacancy rate through the roof with a new "highest", why can't we? :)

Pocket parks - I visited Antwerp in 1975, in the old brick downtown there were scattered parks about one city block in size. My hosts explained these were where V-2 rockets came down and blew out whole city blocks, which were never rebuilt. Actual blockbusters.

The new renderings are promising but I still do not see any fountains, sculptures or public art of any kind. Every great park has some of these elements.

Also, anyone know how tall this "signature building" is supposed to be. The taller the better I say. And for god sakes, I hope it's not brick like almost everything else built in the past 10 years.

I think this is progressing nicely. My best example is Millenium Park in Chicago, a new park, linking existing features and adding new ones to make a spectacular community use space. http://www.millenniumpark.org/

And I agree with the comment about the need to incorporate public restrooms. It is a must.

I found a really, really good aerial photo by Urban Ohio. It's a view of the current mall past State Street. Theater row is in the foreground (Hyatt on Capital Square, Capital office building, Ohio Theater and 5/3 building), and the soon to be demolished mall is in the background.

At this angle it's easy to envision what the Commons can be.

I couldn't agree more. The initial renderings look very unimaginative. A trip to Millenium Park in Chicago could give them some ideas of what a great city park looks like, with bold sculptures, water features and the like.

Knowing that they aren't building any structures directly on top of the parking garages makes me think that the park is a temporary solution. This might explain the lack of any extravagant details in the park too, like fountains, etc.

Oh Please!! A park is a pretty lame idea for this site, Columbus cannot maintain the current park system. Just another place to be hassled by homeless people downtown.

holy shit, really? i'm so tired of reading comments about downtown and homeless people - there are homeless people in every city. hell there are over 90,000 homeless people accounted for in LA county alone. it's not that bad here at all, at most a minor inconvenience/annoyance to tell someone "no you can't have my change or a cigarette". and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with a new park! what really bothers me is that it's a fallacy, a distraction brought up with alterior motives, and one based completely on classism and prejudice. if you are this kind of person, you are in the way of the kind of progress the rest of us are trying to cultivate and i for one would appreciate you keeping your closed mind to yourself.

1. The park is being maintained by Capitol South, not the City's Parks & Rec. Department.

2. I spend quite a bit of time Downtown, and I don't think I've ever been truly "harassed" by a homeless person. Being asked for change is more likely in the Short North and even more so around OSU... but Downtown... not so much.

City Center is cocooned in portable fencing with sandbag weights. A team was in the parking garage and "A" dock last night, shoring up the underground columns for the anticipated demolition.

City Center demolition is to begin October 1st.

I can't wait to see what a City Center-less downtown looks like, although I never really shopped there as the poor college kid I once was, but after they tore down that pedestrian bridge last fall, you could literally see Downtown from one end of High Street to the other...

Just a silly curiosity. When the mall closed which elevators or exits did it leave for people parking in the garage? The only exits I knew of were up into the mall.

The glass doors that lead into the center of the mall where the glass elevators are located are obviously locked.

The 1st and second floor elevator that leads to The Hyatt on Capitol
square, Capitol Square Building and shops, and Ohio Theater is operational. And you can still get to the theater the old way as if you were walking into the mall, but the entrance to the mall is capped off.

There are also the two stairways. One takes you up to Town Street, behind the former US Bank building, the other takes you up to the State Street entrance by Ohio Theater.

I mentioned this somewhere else. I can't remember where since there are so many Columbus Commons threads, but I'll say it again. The more I look at the latest renderings the more I want to run to the toilet and puke. Grass, trees, brick walks and flower beds.....???.....that's it??? I've seen 5th graders draw better pictures than that rendering. Someone out there has an imagination. I hope to god the park plans are altered to include public art, something grand, a centerpiece and point of pride. If it's done as it is shown, then all of the naysayers out there can be proven right....that it was a total waste of money.

While I'm on the subject, I'm really tired of the architecture around this city being "held back". It just seems as though good aesthetics are thrown out the window and the last two words out of every developer, planner and city officials mouth is "fuck it". This city is known for its art scene. Architecture is a form of art, hence make the buildings a piece of art, something worth envoking a double take. Is it so hard to use a little bit of imagination.

The renderings I've seen are pitiful. I think the final vision is too dependent on outside investors who are supposed to come in and complete this vague vision. The amphitheater seems especially redundant since the Genoa Park amphitheater will be less than a mile away.

I've read numerous articles and posts and I'm still shocked that the best use our city could find for a 20 year old, $150 million piece of property is a city park. What a waste. I think that some of the members of the Capitol South board, and maybe the mayor too, were so hell bent on tearing down the mall that they were looking for any excuse to prevent it from being retrofitted.

I really don't mind the park idea. What I do mind is the current design. On a good note, there looks to be enough space for the downtown Kickball league
