I am intereseted in starting a coaliton of individuals who will put pressure on the city to revise their offensively boring design for the former City Center site. The renderings look like a giant football field with some trees flanking the sidelines where the coaches would stand. I am excited to have a downtown park but this is a serious issue. We cannot simply be excited. We need to reject the current renderings and start fresh. The park could be a point of pride for this great city. Let’s make sure it is a beautiful place that mirrors nature. Citizens input should be taken into consideration before this undertaking begins. Any thoughts? Ideas?

I agree with you but think that is the intention so that people aren't angry when it's bulldozed for development. PS, love the name, my favorite album from that great band. Take some advice, sit back and have a cuppa tea.

I too think the city's idea for this space is a bit boring. I recently did a project for a class at Ohio State about rethinking what should be put in the site. I propose the idea of a vertical farm, I think it would be a revolutionary idea for Columbus.

I know the cooper stadium site has been suggested for a vertical farm, however I think that in order for a vertical farm to work to it's fullest potential it must be located in a high-profile area such as the columbus commons. If vertical farming is to become a future form of technology, one must first exist and thrive in the heart of a city.

I was under the impression the city was going to use the open green space for concerts, special events, etc.

I have to disagree with your analysis. If they weren't going to fill in the edges along High and 3rd then maybe I would agree with you. I however, once fully completed, see the park that may look like a "bland square", more like a European city square with shops and cafe's surrounding it. Making it more like a "natural" setting is nice but we have other parks near downtown like that. I think Columbus Commons will be much more user friendly and great for being a central location in the downtown core. Although it might take a while to get to fruition I think it will be a nice complement to Columbus parks and downtown.

how about a Food Truck oval where trucks of all ethnic cuisines can combine forces for the best lunch spot in the city?

I would MUCH rather see a vertical farm on the commons site than obsessive-compulsive tree groupings and multiple 3-story buildings hiding the greenspace from the roads.
Think about it: a plaza with a cutting-edge vertical farm next to the bland walls of the Ohio Theatre/Fifth Third buildings. Throw in some naturally-placed trees, a prolific piece of public art (go big or go home) and some food vendors and why travel to Europe when it's in the heart of our downtown?
It could be called the Coleman Plaza LOL (reference to the Daley Plaza)

The 5/3 one should eventually be covered up, so not too much of a problem. As for the Ohio Theatre; I proposed at the recent downtown meeting that the space be used for a giant mural by one of our local artists. We could have a competition to see who has the best painting. Having it change out with a new painting (Maybe every four years??) would help add interest also, so there will be something new and intrigue now and then. Maybe even have a little "unveiling" celebration too since they want to have so many events there.
Whatever they do, I do agree that they need to do something about the backside of the Ohio Theatre.

I think this would also be a viable way promote small business and provide an exciting destination in the heart of downtown. Makes me want to go and buy a food cart. (hmm, Chinese soup buns anyone?)

About the right size for an aquarium

Happy to hear good ideas! I personally would love to see a large outdoor sculpture, murals on the backs of buildings, and maybe a small community garden. The food cart idea is excellent. The key is to break the grid. We can have an open area for music and light recreation without confining the design to a giant rectangle.

You guys do know that they're building a massive outdoor amphitheater connected to the Ohio Theater, right? The "giant football field" is the lawn for outdoor concerts...

The "giant football field" is the lawn for outdoor concerts...The amphitheater won't cover up the entire Ohio theatre wall though, only the lower portion. Plus an amphitheater seems like the common theme with park development. Scioto Mile, Columbus Commons both putting in amphitheaters right by each other seems like they can't think of any other ideas. Not that I am totally against, just saying that it lacks creativity... if that really matters.
