Columbus Commons Grand Opening Celebration

Downtown
Walker, has there been any discussion about fixing the new cement that's chipping and cracking before grand opening? I didn't read anything on the CC site.

I see they are accepting applications from farmers and vendors for the the Commons Market. Maybe they can coax a taco truck or two downtown. ;]
From what I've read in previous news articles, the cement issue is the fault of whichever contractor installed it and will be fixed at no extra cost. Not sure of the timeline, but I'd hope it would be done prior to the grand opening.
In addition to the new Burgers Dogs & Fries and CupOJoe/MoJoe I've heard that CDDC is looking to get some food carts out there, though I'm not sure what hours/days they're planning for.
Has there been any recent discussion of beautifying the blank wall that's at the north side of the park? Thanks in advance.
Looks like that blank wall is already being dismantled or something. Its covered with tarps or maybe that's the underlayer.

Cool, thanks for the picture. Hopefully there is something creative in the works.

I've heard a rumor that the Fifth Third Building is proactively scouting a new restaurant to go into the old Wendy's space, which could possibly include the buildout of an outdoor patio space that extends into the park. Part of that is where that ugly wall is currently located, so if the rumor is true then perhaps they're waiting to plan construction around that potential development.
Thanks Walker,
That would be great. Patio space overlooking the park is a perfect fit. The Hyatt could maybe do something similar from their location as well.
Yeah, I know the Hyatt / Shoppes at Capital Square (or whatever the retail center through there is called?) has been looking for new food-focused tenants facing the park and I know one cafe-type concept that was looking at the space (though I don't know if it's happening or not).
Also, the U.S. Bank Building (the one pictured here in Jody's photo) is also looking for a new restaurant tenant for their ground floor, facing the park.
If all of those spaces can be filled it would definitely add to the vibrancy around the edges of the park. Especially if restaurants with bars, patios and evening/weekend hours can be found for each spot. ;)
Either way... sounds like there's a lot of search work going on right now. ;)
Really looking forward to this! I've got my fingers crossed that this will spur some the continued growth of downtown nightlife.
City Center Mall never looked so good. Excited to see this project come to fruition.

The 5/3 building and the Ohio Theater are off the park's property and it's up to their respective owners to do something. I'll bet the 5/3 building doesn't meet code - that's just deteriorating plastic over drywall. It's been like that since the mall came down.
My understanding is that the curbs in the worst condition will be replaced beginning as early as next week. That's a tough job!
So I've been vaguely following this. Did they end up putting a stage on one of the ends? It shows it in the renderings but I dont see it in the current pics.
Looks promising, but I'm not particularly optimistic that this will amount to much more than a gathering spot for panhandlers and wanna-be gangstas.

I've heard that line regurgitated hundreds of times, but no one ever really explains why they're predicting that. The majority of our urban parks are normal parks. What sort of precedent leads you to believe that this one is going to be overrun with "greenspace gangstas"?
I imagine there will probably be some people asking for change here and there, but no more than what already exists in the Short North.

No stage yet. I posted a few more photos here:

Obviously I could be wrong, and I hope that I am wrong. But having spent time in City Center and working downtown, I see the type of people that tend to congregate in that area of town. It does not give me a great deal of confidence that the park will be a friendly place to spend my time. I'll stick with Schiller Park when my wife and I decide to take our dogs for a walk.
Gangstas be hatin' green space. Everyone knows that.
ETA - They only thing they hate more than green space is outdoor patios.
