Metro may become its own high school

Students might no longer need permission from their school districts to attend a countywide science- and math-focused high school. And those living beyond Franklin County soon could apply to Metro Early College High School, too.

Those changes would come if officials convert Metro, which is technically a program, into its own state-funded school starting next fall. The move wouldn’t affect its current programming and students still would be able to play sports at their home school, Principal Aimee Kennedy told parents in a letter yesterday.

Write-in Baker, 3 ballot candidates win Columbus school-board seats

Time and again, Columbus school-board candidates keep proving that the easiest path to election is to get your name on the ballot. The three candidates who passed that hurdle this election — board President Carol Perkins, member W. Shawna Gibbs and Bryan Steward — cruised to success in yesterday’s Columbus Board of Education race, all three way out in front of the eight write-ins who were chasing the final open seat.

Incumbent board member Gary Baker claimed the fourth seat as a write-in, collecting more than 17,400 votes in unofficial results. His next-closest rival, Trent Edwards, attracted fewer than 5,000 votes.

Specialized schools top new rankings

Three specialized tax-funded charter schools topped the first top-to-bottom ranking of Ohio public schools, but some educators say the report by the state Department of Education gives an incomplete picture of how districts are doing.

^Man what a horrible idea. I despise rating district to begin with, and this just takes it to a new level.

When you have districts with more than one Elementary, Middle, and High School, you can have major differences in achievement between buildings. I'd much rather send my kid to a great school in a "bad" district than a poor performing school in an overall "good" district.

Board votes to make Metro a standalone high school

The group that oversees the Metro Early College High School voted unanimously this morning to convert the countywide program into a standalone science- and math-focused school, starting in the 2012-13 school year.

The decision means Metro will accept students from anywhere it chooses, instead of needing partnerships with districts that agree to send students there. It also means Metro will directly receive state funding for each student that attends instead of receiving that money passed through students’ home districts.

With the new ranking system, can there even be any doubt anymore that our current administration is trying to end public education? A solid school district like Groveport Madison which receives A ratings from the state is now ranked 599 under the new system? See, now they've found a way to make even your well performing public school sound like a piece of shit. And they've finally been able to remove the actual best school system (and of course one of the most affluent), a public school, from the top ranking.

By the way, if any of you checked the online Dispatch on Thursday evening, you know that the original title of that article said that "Charter Schools" and not "Specialized Schools" top the new rankings, and that they only barely mentioned that the top three schools were special cases in the last line of the article. Not that there was any doubt before, but there's just a little more evidence that shows which side of this fight the Dispatch is on.

Panel backs fewer schools, new office space

A Columbus school-closings group agreed yesterday that the district should close two South Side elementaries in June and tackle its glut of office space.

The committee did not specify which administrative offices should close, but it endorsed the school district’s plan to consolidate far-flung locations into a new, energy-smart building on the Fort Hayes campus. The district would sell vacant schools to raise the money for the new building, which would cost $7.5 million to $8.1 million.

State Rankings for Ohio Schools Released Today

The Ohio Department of Education released a draft list today ranking every school and school district in Ohio by its students scores on state standardized tests. The rankings include traditional public schools as well as charter schools, joint vocational school districts and STEM schools.

Parents Upset At Plan That Would Close 2 Columbus Schools

Parents in several south Columbus neighborhoods aren't too happy with Columbus City Schools. More specifically, they aren't happy with a proposed plan that would close the doors to two elementary schools. It's all part of the district's effort to consolidate to make the district run more efficiently, as well as cut down on costs.

Diversity of suburban schools grows as region changes

Almost three in 10 Dublin students last school year was a member of a racial minority. Its 29.3 percent rate would have qualified Dublin as most diverse among 17 suburban Columbus districts 10 years ago. Now, it ranks seventh.

Whitehall topped the list a decade ago, when 29.7 percent of its students were not white. Today, white students are in the minority.

More whites drawn to charter schools

Charter schools statewide and in Franklin County have become much more racially diverse over the past decade, state enrollment data show.

In the 2000-01 school year, when charters still were new in Ohio, 87 percent of the 748 Franklin County charter students were members of minorities. In the 2010-11 school year, roughly 33,000 students attended local charters, and 63 percent were nonwhite.

Warnings a fallback if schools can’t fire

My favorite parts:
Two teachers who signed last-chance contracts did so because they were chronically absent from school. One missed about 50 days of work — nearly one-third of the school year.

Most of them had been punished before, although sometimes for a different misstep. Some violated previous “last chance” agreements but kept their jobs.

Way to go columbus schools, way-to-go!

City schools to change gifted programs

Many parents are wary of a Columbus City Schools plan to change its gifted and talented program next school year, but others are encouraged that the new format will serve more than double the number of gifted students. Superintendent Gene Harris explained the changes to an overflow crowd of more than 100 parents and district staff members at a meeting last night at the Downtown High School.

Schools losing $4.5M in taxes

As a Columbus schools committee deliberates whether to ask voters for more money as early as this fall, the district’s treasurer says the financial picture has deteriorated over the winter. A bigger-than-expected plunge in the district’s total property value will mean $4.5 million less in revenue this school year than was anticipated last fall, Treasurer Penny Rucker said. The loss will grow to $9.1 million next school year, she said.

For sale or lease: six schools, grounds

Pushed by a new state law, the Columbus school district is poised to put six school buildings — the most in decades — up for sale or lease. Columbus schools might need $555 million
