New City Council Members Appointed for Service

The new Councilmembers are Michelle M. Mills, who is President and CEO of St. StephenÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Community House, and Zachary M. Klein, Deputy Chief of Legal Services to former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray.

These two appointed Councilmembers will run for public election in November to be elegible to keep their seats beyond the interim. Additionally, council president Ginther, council member Hearcel Craig, and Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman will be running for re-election.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the Republican candidates for this yearÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Mayoral and City Council elections have been announced. The candidates for the race include:

Libertarians Seek Signatures for City Council Ballot

The race is on for control of City Hall this November with Democrats and Republicans already lined up and ready to square off. But local Libertarian candidates are still struggling to get on ballot. Potential candidates Mark Noble, Robert Bridges Jr. and Andrew Ullman are required to have a total of 1,000 valid signatures from Columbus voters before the deadline of February 2nd to be eleigble to participate in the primary this May.

Genaro Garcia acknowledges that his wife is better at this part of politics than he is. "Would you like to sign a petition?" a smiling Hilda Garcia asks a woman hurrying into the Whetstone branch of the Metropolitan Library during Thursday's snowstorm.

"My husband, this guy right here, would like to run for City Council in Columbus. He needs 1,000 signatures to get on the ballot."

Hennessy has table for one at "debate"

Sitting alone at a table where four empty seats marked the absence of the four Democratic City Council incumbents this evening, Daryl Hennessy had an audience of about 20 all to himself.

City Council President Andrew J. Ginther and council members Hearcel F. Craig, Zach M. Klein and Michelle M. Mills had made it clear by their silence that they would not take up Hennessy's challenge to debate him on the budget.

City Council incumbents hard to beat

A challenger hasn’t ousted a Columbus City Council incumbent in 14 years. And it has been 16 years since a Republican did it.

But like an underdog football squad facing another season with little hope, a crop of challengers is taking on the powerhouse Democrats at City Hall. Four council seats are on the ballot this fall, two held by Democratic appointees facing their first election.

Campaign 2011: Where candidates stand on crime in Columbus

Columbus’ crime rate remained almost level last year while rates nationally fell to their lowest levels in at least two decades, according to new FBI data. The statistics could become part of the debate as the City Council and mayoral campaigns heat up.

Mayor Michael B. Coleman and the four City Council members running to retain their seats this year — all Democrats — still can point to city crime rates that remain among the lowest in more than a decade since Coleman took office.

Four incumbents have made a winning team for the city

Columbus has a city council that functions well as a team and in collaboration with Mayor Michael B. Coleman and other central Ohio leaders. As voters consider four seats up for election on the seven-member body, The Dispatch has strong confidence in the four incumbent Democrats running to retain those seats. Andrew J. Ginther, Hearcel F. Craig, Michelle M. Mills and Zach M. Klein would continue to serve the city effectively. Voters can return them to office with confidence.

City Council Election 2011: Interview with Daryl Hennessy

Although all seven Columbus City Council members serve at-large, it’s worth noting that Daryl Hennessy stands proud as the “West Side” candidate, running against opponents that largely hail from the East and North sides of the city. Hennessy is running for what would be his first elected office, but comes from a strong fiscal background with years of experience as a budget analyst for the state and federal government.

Even though they'll probably be a-holes if elected and I'll regret doing it, I'll be voting for the Republican and Libertarian candidates for City Council and Mayor.

I'm outraged that the current city government is approving the hockey/arena bailout. Voters have turned it down 4 times in the past and it should have at least been put on the ballot.

The Dispatch does it again. Give me one example of anything Michelle Mills has done on council of substance. She is a lifelong social worker with zero public safety experience, but on day one of her council appointment she was appointed to chair Columbus City Council's Safety Committee. The Safety Committee is arguably the most important council committee, as it oversees 70% of the City's operating budget. How does a novice social worker get to Chair that committee?

And she has been spectacularly ineffective. She single-handedly derailed efforts in Olde Towne East and the Near South neighborhoods to address open-air drug markets and their associated gun violence, because of her absolute lack of knowledge of the issues, and her inability to subsume her ego to the experience of neighborhood leaders.

She is the weakest link in the chain of 4 appointed incumbents running for election. In fact, she has raised just $24,000 dollars according to her campaign finance reports. But don't worry, Mayor Coleman is doing a fundraiser with her October 22nd, and Andy Ginther's webpage (he has raised $405K) says "[he] will do all he can to ensure they will be successful," as quoted by Jayme Staley, campaign manager for the Democratic City Council Campaign. She will be propped up, despite her weaknesses at all levels.

Heck -- even the Republican Matt Ferris has raised more money than Ms. Mills -- and he doesn't have the benefit of incumbency and strong political friends. For the Dispatch to write him off because he has the nerve to contest City decisions like the Arena deal (which Dispatch has a financial interest in), when he only lost the last election by about 1,100 votes (in the Obama Democratic wave) -- is a travesty. We need balance and accountability on Council -- not a bunch of rubber-stamps. Both Matt Ferris and Derrel Hennessy are legitimate challengers for council seats this year.

Darryl has my vote ... I met him, and he is a thoughtful guy and would be a leader on behalf of our neighborhoods. I haven't voted Republican since George Voinovich ran for Governor against a guy named Rob Burch, but I'm voting for Darryl and Matt Ferris this year.

If you're aware that you're making your decisions based on a short term emotional response to a single issue, then why not stop and rethink things for the longer-term approach? You've still got a few weeks to mull it all over.

That being said, I met Daryl in person a couple of months ago, and he came across as a very genuine, knowledgeable and responsible candidate. If elected, I imagine he would ruffle some feathers with oppositional views from time to time when appropriate, but I can't see him being an a-hole (as you put it) without any real reason.
