Columbus bishop forbids fundraising for Komen foundation

Columbus Bishop Frederick F. Campbell is prohibiting parishes and schools in the 23-county diocese from raising money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure because of concerns that funds collected for the breast-cancer organization could be used to pay for abortions or embryonic stem-cell research.

Campbell will not comment further than a statement issued by the Catholic Conference of Ohio that details concerns on behalf of the state’s bishops that Komen funds could go to causes that violate Catholic teaching.

One of the most surreal things about this story is that Bishop Campbell has no left leg below the knee.

He lost it to cancer two years ago.

I don't agree with it but this has been happening in other areas of the country. Regardless, the thread title is misleading as they are fundraising for the Mercy Cancer Centers instead of the Komen Foundation.

In 2010 a spokesman for Komen revealed that 122 Komen affiliates had contributed a total of $733,303 to Planned Parenthood the previous year. In general, organizations are viewed as a whole. It got some bad press in a religion which absolutely opposes abortion. This was further complicated by the fact that while they do not engage in funding for fetal stem cell research at the present time, they said that they would be open to it on a case by case basis. Local money is funneled into the national research fund.

Because of this some Dioceses are donating to the Mercy Cancer Centers instead of Komen. A lot of other Dioceses are still raising funds for Komen. Religion and politics may not mix, but religion definitely has politics.

Not disagreeing, just noting that Komen has made it clear that the Planned Parenthood funds went for breast cancer screening, not abortions.

I think part of the issue is the historic and severe lack of trust between the Catholic Church and Planned Parenthood and the many opposing views on contraception and abortion. I think the church was surprised to find out money was being spent at Planned Parenthood and was afraid that these free social services would be used as leverage to bring people through their doors. Planned Parenthood is an advocacy organization.

I also think that Komen's press release came well after the media/politcal damage was done.

Regardless, the issue is more about who the Catholics are choosing to give their money to. It is hard to bitch as they are probably working harder at it then I am.

Probably a reaction to a riled up congregation and other charities with less or no controversy* to give to. The Dispatch article seems very poorly written.

*atleast in Campbell's opinion

The Komen Foundation is not a controversial organization.

This is a statement from the Bishop based on misinformation. I am confident that once the Bishop reviews the facts, he will rescind his ill-informed call for Catholics to displace their funds to other cancer-fighting organizations.

Sad that Komen bowed to the pressure. Don't even get me started on the Catholic Church. Komen does so much for the BC community, not just research btw. And early detection saves lives. I am living proof of that.

Ridiculous.

Wow. I truly hope that in some miraculous uproar from individuals, they reverse this unfortunate decision. In a country that already has such a gaping wound with healthcare insurance/coverage, decisions like the one above are a true disservice to women and men alike.

A couple of comments from the article linked above worth noting....

The Komen-funded Planned Parenthood programs have helped thousands of women in rural and underserved communities get breast health education, screenings, and referrals for mammograms.

Over the past five years, Planned Parenthood health centers with Komen program funding have provided nearly 170,000 clinical breast exams out of the more than four million clinical breast exams performed nationwide at Planned Parenthood health centers, as well as more than 6,400 mammogram referrals out of 70,000 mammogram referrals.

Is there some reason to believe that Mercy Cancer Centers is using donations less efficiently than the Komen Foundation? If not, then wouldn't Catholics donating to the former instead of the latter essentially be a push? Breast cancer screening & research would still be funded at the same level in the aggregate, correct?

I didn't see this thread title when it first came out, but it's a bit misleading. Opposing giving to one particular cancer-fighting organization because of its other ties is not the same as "forbidding breast cancer fundraising." From the sound of things, the Church is actively supporting breast cancer fundraising for Mercy Cancer Centers.

You forgot the asterisk by Compensation. Which goes on to state,
