Looks like the gearbox in my Austin Healey is starting to eat itself, so I need to find a replacement. In addition, now is the time to upgrade from the crappy stock 4 speed gearbox to a 5 speed.
I can use an old datsun 210 gearbox, but the problem is finding one.. does any junkyard in town specialize in early 80s vintage japanese sedans? I might also be able to use a borg-warner T9 out of an XR4Ti. Either way I need a gearbox, and within the next few weeks would be best...

There used to be a British sports car repair place on McKinley that had a English car junkyard in the back. I'd go there for Triumph parts, before my Spitfire mercifully burst into flames. Thank you Lucas-Girling! And I think it was called something like "British Sports Car Repair"

hrmm, that's very useful and I *will* be checking them out, but what I'm really looking for is a way to not use the shitty stock 4 speed BMC crashbox that came with the sprite/midget and upgrade to a decent 5 speed and be able to drive at highway speeds without turning 5500 RPM..
I'd also be up for anyone who wants to go check out yards with me..

at the auto show this winter, there was a display of Datsun rebuilds and racers. there was at least one club represented. I'll bet those guys know where every datsun transmission in existence lives. I'd google for one of those clubs if I were you.

Besides being a wanna-be gearhead, I am also renown for my ownership of a buncha tools and a pickup truck. If I don't have anything planned when you decide to go, I'm all about it.

Sounds like a plan.. I'm not finding anything online.. I'm thinking best be might be to head out to some of these yards and look for myself sometime this week...

My search last summer for a salvage yard was the last time a Yellow Pages came in handy. I started by finding four or five that mentioned a specialty in Japanese cars (I was looking for an HVAC part for my '98 Accord) and a Web site.
Some have searchable databases, which comes in handy before driving all the way out there and waiting for someone to do the search for you.
I don't know how tough it would be to swap out a VW Jetta seat, but I know a Honda's seat will come out pretty easily with a ratchet set and a couple quick electrical disconnections.
Let me know what color you need and any other requirements (leather, power adjustments, etc) and I'll see what I can find.

my only caution on this (and parts swapping in general) is that many auto manufactures use Torx-type fastners instead of standard bolt heads for some components. You may need some specialty sockets like Torx, hex, etc. so check before you get out there. Also, be prepared to deal with rusty fastners- this could include coming armed with pentrating oil, heat source, impact driver, dead-blow hammer, breaker bar, etc.

also jeans, boots and especially gloves.. It's never fun to disturb a wasp's nest while digging through a pile of alternators.

I have a 96 jetta with a gray patterned velour seat. It's the standard gray upholstery for that year. I'm looking for a picture online... otherwise I'll take a photo when I go home.
It's all manual adjustment. And I don't need the sliders, just the seat itself... the foam in mine has just kind of broken down over the years.

If you go to the right yard, you won't need to do any digging, picking, pulling or anything else more strenuous than handing over your payment. I've only ever chosen yards where you tell a guy behind the counter what you want. He then looks it up on a computerized database to locate the part and a wrench goon is dispatched to retrieve your part.

I would recommend calling around to the various junkyards and asking. Some such as Buckeye Auto Parts have a warehouse where they sort everything and its real handy. Others are the "U-Wrench-It" type of places where you just gotta ask if they have any 3rd generation Jettas around.
If you want to make sure things match, then consider shopping at one of the many fine mail-order type places. I've dealth with http://www.partsplaceinc.com before and things have been OK (although they sent me the wrong exhaust system once). They're located in Auburn Hills, Michigan so consider shipping costs versus taking a trip to Detroit since a seat is a fairly large item.
