Ran across an interesting article http://www.theotherpaper.com/articles/2008/09/11/arts/doc48c842fb63842981516519.txt describing, what I think is, a new or updated book on Columbus Architecture. I've always been fascinated with it, given its close association with my craft.
How kewl would it be to have a morning "walking tour" (or by bike) of some high points of the items mentioned in this book, with some led discussion by the authors. That'd be 20 bucks well spent to learn a little bit about the styles, and history behinds some of Columbus's greatest buildings....

Columbus Landmarks foundation runs a series of architectural tours all summer long. This fall I think we are running a series dealing with Arts & Crafts architecture. I know we are also doing a series at Greenlawn Cemetery about the art and architecture there. Not sure if that is posted yet though

I wish the schools would take advantage of this for field trips (do they?)
When I worked at the downtown library, students would often come in to do reports on the architecture of Main (the original piece of which is a Carnegie building.) Once a girl came in and started asking questions. It took me a few moments to realize that she didn't know what "architecture" meant. No one (not even the teacher, apparently,) had given her the very basics of what to look for... sad.

I think that is true of most adults too. I hear the phrase "architectural detail" used for everything from floor joists to a piece of crown moulding. Makes me want to hurt people. Realtors and home improvement shows are particularly guilty of this.
As for the book, I'm usually immediately distrustful of anything that the AIA has their fingers in but I might pick up a copy anyway.

Just got a copy of this. Alittle disappointed that the pictures are black and white (actually, sorta sepia toned) and the book is a little narrow so you really have to crack the spine.
But I like the way it's arranged by neighborhoods, so you can check out your own 'hood or set up your own walking tour. And I've learned a lot from the entries I've read so far.
If I had electricity, I'd go home and read it tonight....
