Had a couple of issues dropped off at the shop a couple of days back. Most promising magazine publication I have seen here yet. Any other opinions?

I'm on the fence so far. I love the design, and it's a beautiful magazine. But I do agree that there is a bit of a pretentious quality to it. It looks lovely on my coffee table though, and I'll check out a few more issues for sure.Posted 3 years ago # -
I didn't think the magazine was out yet when that started and was interested in an actual conversation about it. I feel like the comments to comments in the news section are less conversational.

Conversate away...
Just didn't want you to miss what those folks posted.Posted 3 years ago # -
Haven't read anything yet, but love the photography.

It's definitely the best looking magazine in the city. I like that the look of the ads are aligned with the aesthetics of the rest of the magazine.

I've been supposed to go help distribute all week, but have been swamped and am feeling WAY guilty! :D
I'm very close to Scott and the folks involved, and therefore extremely biased, but I really am excited about it. Visually, I think it is truly beautiful, and the idea of the contributor based content brings a perspective I feel like I haven't seen before.
Its kind of funny that TT started this thread, because he was going to be getting an email from me about contributing like Maren did in issue one for an upcoming issue LOL!

Being an employed designer and hearing people say the opposite about the look than what I thought.. makes me rethink my profession :p

We talked a lot about the "target audience" for 614 Mag.
CMH has a full-paged add for a plastic surgeon...
I agree with above so far, pretty pictures, sharp. Now need to dig into the content.

I skimmed it yesterday and saw several articles I want to study more. The choice of Dave Bihn from Grapes of Mirth to discuss wines is genius. On the other hand, the first issue took so long to premiere, it was upsetting to read about Chef Drew at Details. Hopefully, future editions will have a little more timeliness.
That being said, it is gorgeous. I'll make sure that my parents get a copy of next month's edition when they visit. It would probably be a good idea to leave these at hotels in the area.

It's very attractive, I have to admit. The layout, photos, and stories made me want to keep flipping through it and skimming. Very well done from that point of view.

C&F, absolutely planned to be more timely. There may be a 2 month break between first and second issues, but the plan is monthly from then on out from my understanding!

The look is great, as is the paperstock.
Jonathon Barnes interview is an A.
Favorite detail so far: the subscription card with the guy holding the gun.
In a UFC cage match 614 Mag. v. CMH: CMH, rear naked choke, 1st round.

That makes a huge difference, to me.

Beautifully stated, Bear.

okay. first of all, i like it.
but am i the only one who thinks it's weird that all of scott cunningham's photos are taken at a 120 degree angle?

I grabbed a copy and was pleasantly surprised. The design excelled over the "other" new local mag when I found I could actually read the table of contents.

I was really surprised to see how well done the magazine was. I love the contributor concept, and like the idea that we'll hopefully get to see the work of more Columbus area photographers. I get kind of tired of seeing the same style of a singular photographer in other Columbus magazines. I'll admit I didn't read the content too much, just skimmed it, but then I look at magazines for the art and photography so that's not really a slight against CMH.
I am curious though, will this continue to be free or will there be a charge for it in the future? Of course I *hope* it stays free, but I can see myself paying for a copy, if the price was reasonable. The art/photography aspect it just that exciting for me!

It is going to remain free (unless you subscribe). I'm a big fan of Scott's work already, but seeing Steve Vaccariello in a local magazine is pretty impressive (even if we've known the guy for years). Kyle Widder hasn't shot anything yet (at least I don't think), but I like Kyle's work too.
