Yeah, it old news but I have been seeing some pretty interesting shows in places like Charlotte, Indy, etc passing by Columbus this year and past years since Polaris closed. I think it’s killing Columbus not having a mid-large (20000ppl) outdoor venue (LC is a little too small and Crew stadium is a little too big). Any thoughts from you guys and any suggestions to remedy this issue?

I think Cooper Park could run into the same problems Polaris had with noise compliants, etc. But, if they can build a raceway there, why not concerts?

Yeah I agree. Its really too bad that we are missing out on some of these concerts.I'm sure it made financial sense at the time to close down polaris but it really seems to have been a bad decision now. I'm not sure what huntington park's capacity is but it seemed like it was enough for the dave matthews band show which used to play at polaris. The problem with venues like crew stadium and huntington field is that the first priority is the teams schedules. Yes there may be some flexibility for Rock on the Range or a DMB show but they aren't suited for weekly big name shows.
I know they've said columbus commons will be able to accomodate 10000 when they install the stage. I think that would be an awesome place for a show but you still are looking at 10000 less capacity then polaris. Cooper Park may be the best answer to the question. I'm not sure if concerts are in their plan but their concert seating arrangement would prbably be the closest to the 20000 mark just based on my estimations.
Actually the best answer really may be for all of these venues to have a partnership put together by experience columbus,or some entity like that,in which venues roatate hosting by what their schedule is and also what the music acts capacity to draw is. Although this probably wouldn't happen I see this as a win win for everyone involved. We already are not getting the majority of the big summer acts and crew stadium and huntington park have hosted what is available. The LC is too small to get these acts so they aren't out of any money either way. This partnership would guarantee a single bid for the concert series and really wouldn't be any inconvenience to the bands. The smaller venues like columbus commons or huntington park would be a much better option in my thought then playing to a half empty ampitheater crowd anyways. Well just a thought. Anything we can do to get these shows back is crucial in my opinion.Its amazng how many people I used to meet from out of state at polaris/germain who had come in just for the shows.Posted 10 months ago # -

I believe Cooper Park will have to follow the same rules and requirements for any loud event - racing or concerts, which is not to violate the Columbus city code.

I never liked the way the drums sounded at Polaris.

I'm pretty sure nascar racing is not going to be anywhere near cooper park. If anything it sounds like it would be the wealthier car collector series and things along those lines.I'm not a huge fan of the development but I do believe theres a lot of misinformation regarding it and this is coming from a german village resident!

A lot of bigger acts will skip Columbus and Indianapolis if they can hit Cincinnati and draw from both. I've seen others skip Cleveland and Cincinnati and hit Columbus because of the central location. Seems like it changes up every other year.
Just a thought...

Why does it have to be outdoor? There's not much going on at Nationwide or the Schott during the summer. If a band thought they could make money with a concert in Columbus, would they really pass up the profit just because the concert wouldn't be outside?

prefer to call it germain
outdoor = more fun
was germain closed because of noise or due to famished developers wanting a piece of the sodelco real estate pie?

I was always under the impression it had to do with the real estate values. This was what was reported at the time.

^ Yep. Basically, from what I remember, PromoWest got a ton of money handed to them by a developer for the land. Probably much more than it is actually worth. I don't think that PromoWest was even actively looking to sell at the time.
